7. There's a lot of that kind of semantic rivalry between France and England.
During the Renaissance, VD was known by the French as "The English Disease" and by the English as the "Malady of France." Condoms are still known colloquially in England as "French Letters" (presumably a slur on the unrestrained licentiousness of the French).
