I had to work in an office building there for 2 years and the smell was overwhelming.

Really. Though not as much as Brooklyn or The Bronx or Queens.

Staten Island smells worse, it smells like New Jersey.

(To be fair, NYC will always be home to me. I love the smell of bum's piss in the mornin'. It smells like freedom.)
