Neil Finn fans?
I was listening to him last night. Why isn't this guy a major name in music? His voice and songwriting are incredible.

1. Yeah. He's up there with Elvis Costello and Aimee Mann
probably the three best songwriters operating today.

8. I've put Aimee at the top of the list for years
It's a shame that she doesn't much play.

I went to a couple of Shawn Colvin concerts a few years back, and Shawn sang a Crowded House song at each of them, stating, "Everyong should know every Crowded House song." Hear Hear!!!

2. He is a major name...
where has anyone not heard of Crowded House? I think his personal career isn't as big because people want "American idols" now, not genuine musicians.

3. Crowded House got to #2 in the US with Don't Dream It's Over in '86
They were later arena-size in the UK, Ireland, Europe and Australasia.
They didn't do too badly.

4. Great tune, but not their best, and not indicative of the creative genius
that is Neil...there are few other artists that I can listen to without getting tired of the music...it's so varied, and melodic and lyrically cool and interesting...I have never understood why Split Enz/Crowded House/Neil as solo artist were not more popular in the States.
I used to manage a record store, and when we got the very first Split Enz album (don't think Neil appeared on that one, but not sure) I was hooked...and morphed right into CH and Neil's solo stuff.
Love it all...

6. The biggest hit is never the best song. That prize goes to 'Distant Sun'

Universe...or Tall Trees...or Kare Kare...or Message to My Girl...or And She Goes On...
I just can't pick a fave! Really!

5. Too British
Edited on Mon Mar-22-04 10:14 AM by muchacho
Yeah, I know he's a Kiwi but he's British in musical and fashion style and us Yanks have always been cold to giving in too much attention to that (think the Jam and XTC).

Personally, I love him. One of the best shows I've ever been to.
