are still in charge, in shouldn't surprise you that there is plenty of money to develop avatars, but none to help paraplegics walk because of those darling STEM CELLS.

(Note: the bad guy in the film promises that he'll restore the Marines working legs IF he helps him with the corporation's mission, so obviously we don't have Universal Health care 100 years from now either).

7. Unobtainium? Really? That's the dumbest name for an element, ever.
The first time I heard it, I thought "They couldn't possibly give it such a stupid name, could they? I must have misheard the dialogue."

Nope. Unobtainium.

8. They didn't invent it
It's a whimsical aerospace engineering (among other things) term for anything that's either very rare or a huge pain to make. The ship in The Core was made of unobtainium. It also applies to theoretical materials that can't actually exist.

Still weak, though.

9. They can, but it cost more money than he could afford on a grunt's salary
That was part of the first ten minutes of narration. That was part of how the general roped him into spying on the Navi; he promised that the corporation would front the cost of his spinal cord operation.

15. I think it was pretty obvious that the future portrayed in the film is not a positive one
Wars of conquest and greed continued on an interstellar scale, and humanity had essentially destroyed Earth in its rapacious need for more money. Why would such a society give someone a pricy medical operation for free?

It makes perfect sense within the context of the film, so I'm not sure why you're trying so hard to poke a hole in this particular plot point.

18. actually, the movie makes a point of explaining both aspects...
Edited on Mon Dec-21-09 02:23 AM by dysfunctional press
first off- the 10-foot smurf wasn't 'wired' for him...
second- they could fix his legs- if he could afford it(apparently he didn't qualify for subsidies)...they even dangle a new pair of legs in front of him like a carrot on a stick(the effect is best viewed in 3d).

did you not see the movie- or just not pay attention...?

24. So...
Edited on Mon Dec-21-09 03:24 PM by Orrex
Because I think that Cameron is a schlocky director--and that his current offering is more or less indistinguishable from a video game--this means that I must somehow be jealous of him? What crazy CGI planet are you from, anyway? Off the top of my head I can think of three of his films that are unwatchably bad. Whatever his accomplishments, he's also capable of really terrible film-making.

btw- did you design and render your DU avatar image all by yourself??? it sure seems like oscar-caliber graphic design work...:snicker:

Gosh, that's a zinger. What time is recess over? Give me Cameron's budget and creative control, and I'll put together an avatar worthy of the most pandering Happy Meal toy you've ever seen, just like Jimmy has done.

And did you stuff your head up your ass all by yourself? That's some USGS-caliber spelunking.

31. so...what format did you see the entire film in...?
2d, 3d, or 3d-imax?

considering how much you trash you like to talk about avatar- i have to assume that you've seen the entire film...otherwise your posts would reek of incessant & ignorant jealousy of cameron's success- and you claim that isn't it- so you must be making an informed judgement after seeing the film in it's entirety, and i'm just curious as to which format you saw it in. i saw it in 3d-imax, and it's NOTHING like the movie you describe, so i have to believe that perhaps you viewed it in a 'lesser' format, or at a sub-standard theatre.

Am I only permitted to mock things of which I'm jealous? How the hell does that figure?

Tell you what. Send me $40 to offset the cost of seeing it in Supercolossal Realer-than-Real IMAX, if it's that important to you.

Until then, I'll be happy to complain about the glimpses that Jimmy himself has given us re: the horrible previews that he greenlighted.

so there must be some underlying reason...

yep...jealousy, plain and simple. the green-eyed monster strikes again...
