ST: TNG question...
How did Geordi LaForge manage to go from Helm to Chief Engineer without spending time as a junior officer in Engineering?

Did his family have all the right connections? Was he sleeping with the right people? Bribery?

And what the fuck was a goddamn guidance counselor doing on the frakkin' bridge?

1. In season 1, and it's understandable as little of it has any rewatchable value,
Geordi seemingly spends more time in Engineering than he does on the bridge.

Besides, after the run of Scotty-wannabes not knowing a wall socket from a light switch, let's just say he did the exams and got moved over.

:D

3. Troi is so forgettable I forgot to include her in my response!

She just stands around, bouncing, and saying "He's hiding something, captain". (Well duh!)

8. If you were Pickard and had the option of spending a good
part of your day sitting next to the counselor or sitting next to Worf, who would you choose?

11. Guinan really made Troi extra useless.
Picard always went to Guinan for counseling and advice anyway, so Troi served no practical purpose once Season 2 started.

5. Season One
was havoc, and I was surprised it survived and got better and better. All the good screen writers left, new ones came in with no clue and no guidance. Martina Sirtis was first cast as Tasha Yar, but then they decided to make her the ship's counselor - and then they had nothing for her except some lines along 'I sense some hostility.' To be honest, they kept her because of boobage, just sitting there.

And between season one and season two, some miracles happened. Like when Kirk obviously was a Lieutenant when still in Starfleet Academy.

9. You don't get to be a senior officer, and third in command...
...without serving time at multiple bridge stations. While I don't credit TNG with that sort of foresight, Geordi's multiple roles are an element that rings true.

10. They initially thought it would be funny to have the blind guy flying the ship.
Then they realized the joke wasn't really that funny.

That is seriously what the writers were thinking.

12. To the people saying that Geordi is blind...
He is, but only when he takes the visor off.
