Poll question: Which of these performances would you vote for?
Coburn won, Goodman wasn't even nominated, though his performance is likely remembered more. Interesting how what catches people's attention at the time isn't always what people remember most.

1. "It's a mystery."
Geoffrey Rush gets my vote. I thought Shakespeare In Love was a fabulous tongue in cheek comedy.

2. Very skilled actor, isn't he?
Not that anyone on that list wasn't.

"Shakespeare in Love" is one of my favorite films.

3. I didn't vote

Because the only performance I seen out of those choices was Ed Harris in The Truman Show. If I seen others I could compare but he put on a good performance. I just can't imagine him being better then the others.

I got to see The Big Lebowski, I read so many good things about that film on this site.

4. I didn't vote either.
The only two I've seen are The Big Lebowski, which I absolutely loved, and Shakespeare in Love, so casting a ballot wouldn't really be fair. That said, everyone listed is an interesting talent, and I have a soft spot for Geoffrey Rush in particular.

I agree wholeheartedly that everything can look different in retrospect, and of course a great many people who deserve nominations never get them (e.g., Ian Holm in The Sweet Hereafter).

12. Holm was magnificent in that role.
I read the book before I saw the movie.

Both WERE great, and both stay with me in
the sad lonely place in my brain where I
push such possibilities....

5. Coburn or Billy Bob
Though Harris was decent. I didn't like Shakesphere in Love at all.

10. Seen them all. Coburn's performance was magnificent.
Memorability aside, impossible to compare a comedic performance to a dramatic but I still think Coburn deserved the award.

11. Coburn has been seriously underrated as an actor.
He did it all, comedy, action, drama...

I always loved the cheeky bastard!

13. I remember at the time being happy he got it.
As much for his career as for the one performance. I also thought Goodman deserved a nomination, but that was a strong year for movies. Shakespeare in Love, The Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan, The Big Lebowski, American History X, Elizabeth, Gods and Monsters, Life is Good, Affliction...

A lot of years can't scrap together half that.
