Serious question...Is it possible to crack or break a rib by sneezing?
I had my upper torso twisted this morning while at my desk reaching for something...it was probably twisted close to 90 degrees.

I had a violent sneeze come on so quickly that I could not get straightened out before I sneezed....and holy crap...it felt like something snapped and it is painful to take a deep breath now.

Can you break a rib by doing something like that?

1. Seriously, honey, are you okay?
If you think you broke something, go to the ER, okay?

3. Sure, just don't breathe too much, cough, sneeze, laugh, etc., etc.

4. It's not okay if you have a broken rib.
Please get it checked out, okay?
Maybe they can't do too much, but they can help you with the pain.

5. You may have triggered a muscle spasm.
I have a little trick in my back still from a night in unheated German barracks. It first manifested as intense pain near the spine, and it hurt to breathe deeply. Took anti-inflammatories and a shot of Novocain to make it relax.

7. Thanks, Orsino...
Maybe it is muscle related...I'll see how it feels tomorrow.

11. You could have damaged some connective tissue...
...if so, you'll have 2 to 3 weeks of discomfort.

Then you REALLY don't wanna cough cuz it hurts like hell! The doc confirmed it when I showed him where the "new" pain was. He ended up giving me Lortab to get over the painful spells cuz nothing else was helping.

12. Yup.
Been there, done that. Not fun...really hard to do though...you likely either tore or strained something instead.

15. I had a subluxed rib once, sounds similar
I'm not sure what I did, all I know is that suddenly I had an intense stabbing pain while breathing, and I had to move very slowly not to irritate it. I went to a clinic, and while they were having me sit up to take an EKG or something, I heard and felt a "pop", and the pain vanished. Occasionally, if I bend or twist I can feel it going back, but then it snaps back into place. Where my rib subluxed, there is a nerve right there, and the rib was pinching the nerve. I've broken many bones and torn ligaments, and I think the pain of this was worse.
