Also, there are more crumbs between the keys than I have ever seen.

Additionally, the letters A, S, and D are completely worn off.

My mouse is covered with about 1/8th of an inch of Cheesy Poof dust.

The "8" key has so much chicken wing grease on it that I cannot recognize the key when the light hits it a certain way.

Just pop the keys off and try to clean out what's around and under it. Let it dry for a day and you should be in good shape.

If that seems too inconvenient and you want to try something risky, you could put the keyboard in a dishwasher (no soap). Put the USB or PS/2 in a plastic bag and seal it. Wait a day or two and see if it works.
