43. History of Reefer Madness

It was originally titled "Tell Your Children." A church group funded its production. And it was so absurd NO ONE believed it. An exploitation filmmaker named Dwain Esper bought it and added even more shit to it.

It lay forgotten in the Library of Congress until Keith Stroup, founder of NORML, filed a Freedom of Information Act request for it. He paid $297 for a print of it. He then started a company to distribute the film to college campuses...he named the company "New Line Cinema." Reefer Madness earned so much money (because it is one of the finer pieces of unintentional humor our government has ever produced, ranking right up there with "USS VD: Ship of Shame") they were able to branch out into distributing higher-quality films like Pink Flamingos and Polyester--which of course led to them ultimately becoming one of America's top movie companies.

I simply MUST tell this heartwarming story from my misspent youth. Government employees like to give money to charity and there are lots of charities for them to give to. To prevent ten thousand different charities from coming in and hitting our brave public servants with pitch after pitch, the feds created the Combined Federal Campaign. They give you a little book with all the charities in it. You pick out the ones you want to donate to, and you can either write a check or set up a monthly payroll deduction. At one time you could give to ANY charity; the book for next year was compiled from all the charities people had used. One of the divisions in West Germany was having a contest to see which unit was the most generous. I guess they were offering a three-day pass to the outfit with the highest percentage of donors. This led to abuses, as you'd expect. One commander actually ORDERED his troops to donate. Some of the troops got pissed at this. One guy got pissed enough that he donated $250 to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Next year...sure as shit...NORML had a CFC number, which pissed the commanders off to no end. "How are we supposed to run our antidrug programs if a group whose stated purpose is violating the drug laws is in CFC?" read one letter to Stars and Lies. (For the record, they don't advocate breaking the drug laws, they advocate legalizing weed. Big difference.) I think someone also donated money to NAMBLA, but they were astute enough to not put THAT one in the handbook.

Assume they were successful and weed was legalized--no, I haven't backed off from my position we need a quantitative/qualitative intoxication test (as opposed to the cop just standing in the dock saying 'yeah, he looked stoned to me') before we do it. We could look forward to:

Sales and excise tax revenues from the sale of marijuana
Business tax revenues from the thousands of businesses that would spring up to service the pot trade
The ability to keep violent criminals locked up that we don't have now because we need all our prison beds for pot offenders
Quicker trials because court dockets won't be packed with pot offenders
Reduction in the use of other drugs--if you had your choice of illegal meth or legal weed, which would you pick?
Reduction in violence--there would be no need for gangland-style violence in the pot trade when anyone could get a Retail Marihuana Dealer License and go into business? (The legal name of pot remains Marihuana to maintain consistency.)

Everyone working in the advertising and marketing businesses should be required to watch The Stuff every year as a reminder of the power of their industry to do evil.

For those lucky enough never to have seen this film, The Stuff is a product like ice cream. It's delicious, calorie-free and "doesn't even stain" when someone throws the shit at the wall. Unfortunately, it's also made out of space aliens who eat your brain. Stir in a disgraced agent of one of the three-letter agencies, a hot advertising executive who becomes the agent's girlfriend, a preteen boy who saw The Stuff crawling across the refrigerator, his Mike Brady-like father and reasonably hot mother (both of whom are, unfortunately, dumb as stumps), a deposed cookie mogul who appears to have been based on Famous Amos, and a retired colonel who's a cross between Gordon Liddy and Rambo, plus the corrupt head of an ice cream company and the equally-corrupt head of the Stuff company...good times all around.

The motto of The Stuff is "enough is never enough." My wife said once was enough for her.

It's the most unintentionally funny movie I've ever seen.

Britney Spears is a competent enough actress, so the humor is not due to her acting. It's the writing, which is so mind-bendingly bad that you're able to describe yourself as having "suffered" through the plot. Several parts of the movie seriously seem to have been written by a pre-teen.

Just one example (of many I could give): Britney (playing an average 18 year old, not a professional singer) and her friends sing one single song at a karaoke bar, and the tip jar fills so much that they're able to spend several nights in fabulous hotel rooms that would have to cost hundreds of dollars a night. We're supposed to believe they got about two thousand dollars in tips for singling a barely-passable rendition of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll."

The whole movie is crammed full of that kind of writing.
