1. Wow! A 19 minute long Black Napkins!

You think it's all guitar solo, or do you think there's a middle section of poetry, random musings, audience participation, or etc.?

I hope it's all guitar solo.

2. It's almost all guitar solo

VERY slow and trippy, very subtle, picks up intensity around the 14 minute mark. At 15 minutes, Frank's SPRAYIN'...he takes it back down around 17 minutes and the famous "weeee----oooo" doo-wop vocals come in behind him.

Bianca Thornton does some "wordless vocalizing" around the 2 minute mark. Eddie Jobson takes a violin solo around the 7 minute mark. Other than that, it's all FZ.

This is one to own. "Muffin Man" is pretty lethal, too.

4. The Zappa fan reviews, for the most part...

...say that it is "not as good as" similar live sets from the era, such as "Zappa In New York"...and that this one (along with its predecessor, "Zappa In Buffalo") are "authorized bootlegs" in comparison.

That's true, to a degree...they are not as polished as "Zappa in New York," but the setlists...as well as the always unexpected "special moments" inherent in any Zappa show...make them worth owning.

5. WTF? Those fans are crazy!

Honestly I feel that FZ was at his best live and unpolished.

6. In one of his final interviews, Zappa was asked about "the can"...

...he was looking ahead, not really knowing when the final day would arrive, but speculating...much in the same way that Neil Young has done with his "Archives" series...about how long quality releases could be issued after his passing.

He made a reference to live shows he had "in the can"...

...and the interviewer asked about that, and he said "Well, it's a pretty BIG CAN..."

My feeling, from what I know, is that Frank recorded pretty much EVERYTHING. That's how he was able to produce the six-volume "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" series in his lifetime.

The Zappa Family (and by that, we mean wife Gail, who is the real person in power) was less than aggressive on posthumous releases. We got things like "The Mystery Disc" which was nothing more than little tiny snippets of banter and comedy and percussive effects.

What WE...the FANS...really wanted...was FRANK IN CONCERT, Frank being Frank, with a few terrifying guitar solos as part of the ride.

So the "Buffalo" set came out, and now this new one, and we're starting to get what we've wanted all along, so...to paraphrase Frank himself...maybe we should "Shut Up 'n' Enjoy His Guitar."

If you go to the second link in my original post you can read some of those reviews..."fans" picking apart the lack of perfection (as they see it).

You're right, this new one SMOKES, and shouldn't be compared to any other previously released Zappa CD. It's a killer set list, It's got Ray White and Terry Bozzio, it's good enough...and MORE.

8. FZ definitely knew a thing or two about big cans.

I totally agree, more FZ in concert is definitely a good thing. And the more raw, uncensored and unpolished it is, the better!

9. It was in his book, or a magazine interview, that Frank said in the late 80s he'd released about 2%

of what he had in the can.

He didn't say if the can he was talking about was just stuff he'd recorded live and in the studio, or also included the vast library of "classical" stuff he'd composed but never had performed or recorded.

11. There was an interview with Gail Zappa in the LA Times not too long ago.

Gail said that there was enough material "in the can" that they could release a new studio or live album every year for the next 100 years. :wow:

10. Excellent setlist; must have this recording. There is an abundance of FZ non-music on youtube.

My favorite is a European documentary 'Peefeeyatko' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Fh1qaKV-ig there is a lot of great stuff on this person's channel.

I made a DVD of FZ interviews for my brother's xmas gift. He loves it.
