Apparently it was a bit of a sleeper hit this last fall, but I missed it in theaters. I rented it last night and enjoyed it. I also recommend it.
It's in the same "found footage" genre as The Blair Witch Project; they're in a haunted house this time instead of haunted woods. It works better than the Blair Witch Project, there's a much more straightforward narrative.
The best moments of the film are when the couple film themselves sleeping at night, which is when the haunting occurrences tend to occur. Anybody who's gotten goosebumps after being woken up by bumps in the night should get some good chills from these scenes.
Like all good horror movies, the film relies on suspense and psychology rather than gore and monsters. Which makes the films one major flaw, the ending, all the worse. You can almost see the talentless, soulless film company executive writing this ending and tacking it on. It was as bad as what they did to the American version of The Descent from several years ago. The DVD has the option of watching the film with an alternative ending. That's much better. Not great, but far better than the theatrical release. Watch that one.
