I'm probably the only Werner Herzog fan at DU. I'm gonna cry. Tell me it's not true.

I'm probably the only Werner Herzog fan at DU. I'm gonna cry. Tell me it's not true.
My first taste was "Burden of Dreams".

Then I absolutely had to buy "Fitzcarraldo".

And rent "Little Dieter Needs to Fly".

And buy my own copy of "Grizzly Man".

So many great films, great lines in them, Werner is a film maker in a category all his own.

Any other fans out there?

1. Major fan of "Aguirre, The Wrath Of God."
Tell you what isn't true? Did he die? What?

2. Probably his most commercially successful film, maybe even made money.
I love that he doesn't seem to care about profit.

He's about telling stories of madness and obsession, often of real people.

"Aguirre, The Wrath Of God" inspired, at least a little, Coppola in his execution of Apocalypse Now, he said.

Thanks for checking in!

3. Absolutely! He's fascinating as a director and as a person.
To be sure, I can't quite figure him out--showman, obsessive, brilliant director, with a serious attraction for other men who are similar. If you haven't seen it, rent Incident at Loch Ness, a "documentary" about a crew making a documentary about Herzog making a documentary about the Loch Ness Monster. It gets funnier and funnier and more and more absurd until...okay, no spoilers. But it broke me up.

I also haven't seen (but it's on Youtube so I will when I get a chance) God's Angry Man, a very early Herzog documentary about Dr. Gene Scott, another fascinating obsessive man.

Now aren't you glad you asked?

4. I AM glad I asked! And I did see that weird, really weird, Loch Ness thing.
I still really don't understand that one, I'll have to get it again.

I'll look for God's Angry Man, too. I know of Dr. Gene Scott, know an older woman who used to watch him all the time.

17. I loved Incident at Loch Ness, because you could tell Herzog was having
so much fun at his own expense. :hi:

5. "Rescue Dawn" is the Dieter Dengler story.
Herzog dramatized that amazing story with Christian Bale as Dieter Dengler. It is fabulous. Bale fits as well with Herzog as Klaus Kinski did. A great choice in casting.

7. I haven't seen that, I've only seen the documentary with Deiter as himself.
So the dramatization must be terrific.

Thanks!

6. I think Werner Herzog's best work
is with that lunatic Klaus Kinski.
Werner and Klaus had a love/hate relationship
that made magic on the screen.

8. I am a huge fan of Herzog.
Loved "Fitzcarraldo" and his other work with Kinski, whom I also love. I really enjoyed his remake of "Nosferatu".

18. I've been watching "Grizzly Diaries" on Planet Green...
They use his footage and his written notes, read by a narrator.

It's just not the same, not as good, as Tim's own ranting.

10. Absolutely.
I've seen a fair amount of his work -- three of the five Kinskis, most of the '70s works, and a few of his more recent films.

Have you read "Conquest of the Useless"? It's Herzog's journal on the making of Fitzcarraldo -- basically the literary version of Burden of Dreams. I definitely recommend it.

11. He first tried to make "Fitzcarraldo" with Jason Robards, Jr.
Extras on the DVD show a failed attempt by Herzog to make 'Fitzcarraldo' with Jason Robards,Jr. As good an actor as Robards was the scenes seem flat compared to what Klaus Kinski did with that role.

19. Mick Jagger was in there, too. Herzog was like the character, Fitzcarraldo, in his passion...
Burden of Dreams is a must see companion piece, it's the making of Fitzcarraldo.

If you haven't seen it, try to get it.

12. Don't cry. Another big fan here.
Loved his work ever since I saw "Jeder fur Sich und Gott Gegen Alle", still one of my favorite movies of all time.

Come to think of it, I don't even think I've seen a bad Herzog film, although there must be one out there.

13. Good selection available on Netflix Instant View
Stroszek and Aguirre were the ones that made me seek more of his work.

15. I joined Netflix just to see all his films
And they have a ton of his movies that I haven't seen yet. I rented "Incident at Loch Ness" not knowing it was a mocumentary. Man, was I even fooled!
