8. and yet would be hard put to find anyone who says it is their favorite film
Home Alone was a huge hit in its day also. I have seen two of the movies on this list. They were OK. Even fun kind of. Lasting movies for the ages? Not really.

9. Titanic will be lasting for the sole reason of being number 1
unless Avatar takes the top spot. The Dark Knight will be remembered for Heath Ledger's remarkable role.

The list that accounts for inflation is more representative of the movies with the most staying power.

14. You must not know very many 20-something women.
And it may not be their "favorite movie" but I know A LOT of 20-30 year old women (now I guess they were teens at the time?) who literally saw titanic 10 times in the theaters.

2. James Cameron has toilet paper made out of $1000 bills
He has to have the US government specially print him $1000 bills to wipe his ass since the US Mint only makes bills up to $100.

3. Meaningless
without adjusting for inflation. In 1970, you could see a movie for $1.

16. and before that when Gone with the Wind was released a nickle.
Box office should be based on number of people attending a film rather than the amount charged to get in. I would like to see the stats for that, a true indicator of a film's popularity.

11. It's not criticism of the movies
When people brag about not having seen "popular" movies, it's to assure themselves of their higher status among the cultural elite. DU is rife with that attitude.

21. Your loss...
The fact that something made money doesn't automatically make it bad.

Why don't you try actually watching them and then you can post an informed opinion instead of a snobbish dismissal?

22. You're wrong about it being snobbery. The content just doesn't interest me.
I like classic movies and retro trash. Stuff made before 1970. Just a matter of my personal preferences.

23. Then why were you "proud" to say you hadn't seen them?
If it's just a "personal preference", and not a value judgment, wouldn't it be enough to say "I prefer other films"?

Sorry but you set yourself up for the claims of snobbery.

Successful movies, the bane of DU. Sorry it wasn't some little snit from England that showed in 6 theaters and go Oscar nominated because the purer than thou deemed it Oscar worthy. It's a film for real people to enjoy who want to escape their mundane lives for a couple of hours.

27. Ok...Here's what I don't get:
Titanic has been #1 for a decade. I wasn't overtaken by Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, The Dark Night, Harry Potter or Spiderman...even though those films all have devoted, almost religious followings that treat the subject almost like a religion. People go see those movies dozens of times.

Yet, Avatar, which is just a screenplay from out of nowhere with a little bit off buzz which happens to be directed by James Cameron is on pace to beat it? SHENANIGANS! Cameron has found a way to pad his numbers.

35. Hey, I've seen Dark Knight!
I can't watch Titanic...I just can't.

I keep meaning to watch LotR because I know I like them, but at 10 hours it's a little daunting for someone who has the attention span of a ferret drinking a double espresso. My friend can quote all three religiously....kinda scares me.

Haven't seen Pirates yet, but I'll watch it when my buddy borrows it from his friend, and if he doesn't, oh well.

I probably won't see Avatar any time soon. I hate cinemas, and it seems like the kind of flick that begs for a large screen viewing. It probably won't be half as good on tv, but that'll be the only way I see it. The idea of sitting in a crowded sticky floor cinema fills me with anger and dread. :)

I loved the Dark Knight!!!! Yay for me....I saw one!!!! :)
