...during the 70s and 80s. He seemed to play Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan and Korean characters as often as he played Japanese. And remember, Bruce Lee was "Kato" in "The Green Hornet," who was supposed to be Japanese.

Hollywood has a long and ignoble history of casting Asian actors as if they're interchangeable. On the other hand, I suppose it's a small step up from the previous policy of painting Anglo actors with "Oriental" makeup and hoping nobody would notice. Mickey Rooney in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" made me cringe when I was eight years old. And Warner Oland's schtick as Fu Manchu and Charlie Chan wouldn't fool a blind person.

Both Ziyi Zhang and Michelle Yeoh are Chinese, and so they used them as Japanese because they were both popular at the time.


There are plenty of Japanese actors,~~ Clint Eastwood never had a problem finding them (Letters from Iwo Jima).

I thought they probably could have found some if they had looked. Bring them over from Japan if necessary. There are some wonderful actors there. Don't get me wrong, I love both Yeoh and Zhang. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will always remain one of my top favorite movies.

Despite all of his martial arts abilities, when it comes to acting ability, Jackie Chan knows how to play ONE role.

Jackie Chan. He's Mel Gibson with karate moves...a showboat. The late Pat Morita had a sense of cool. That's what made the "Miyagi" role memorable.

Once again, I go back to one of David Spade's bits on SNL, at a time when "tribute" albums were all the rage, and the "A" list players had been exhausted, and the trend went to "B" and then "C" listers.

An exasperated Spade asked "Do you know WHY The Beatles recorded all of those songs?"

That's why Karate Kid I-III were made.
