Netflix/Roku thank you

I want to thank everyone for suggesting netflix and the roku box from my recovery from ankle surgery. I had such a good time watching all kinds of things I never ever knew existed.. john Hannah in New Street Law, Chef, IT crowd along with old favourites (all creatures great and small). I can now cue and watch old series that I could never get in sequence from the public library or spend a fortune on DVDs. Not everything I want is available but I have plenty of viewing to keep me busy.

i haven't had cable for nearly two years and it's kept me going just fine. i just finished a couple of fascinating bbc series on dinosaurs and prehistoric mammals.

3. I recommend Netflix/Roku every chance I get.

Hundreds of hours of video: movies, documentaries, tv series of all kinds and they look great on my 50' plasma. Plus, I get up to 3 Blu Ray dvds in the mail each week. It's a great entertainment value.

Also the Roku box allows you to rent Amazon videos and I've seen some great ones from there.

You have to have a subscription to netflix which I do for 7.99 a month. The box was 79$ one time fee. I took it out of the box plugged it in and it found my wireless router instantly and I was watching one of thousands of shows, movies, television shows and documentaries in minutes. You cue up the DVDs to be sent through US mail on the website and you cue watch instantly on the site as well and off you go. I sat with my ITOUCH because I couldn't walk and cued stuff from the chair.

Have Netflix and a wired router. Would the box work with that?

You use AV cables (composite, component or HDMI) to connect the Roku to the TV.

There are several Roku models with different bells and whistles.

9. Yeah, I just hooked mine up the other day and was quite impressed

It was really easy, and the picture looks great on my old CRT television. The access to the movie is about as quick as finding it on the shelf and popping it into the DVD player, without all the FBI warnings and unwanted previews.

One downside is no "special features" but 99% of the time, I either skip them, or they wouldn't be missed.

Seriously considering ditching my cable at this point, if it weren't for Comedy Central, but even TDS and South Park are generally available to stream, right? Hmm...

10. It even looks good on my 50" plasma tv.

I haven't had cable for years, just over the air hdtv which gives me twice the number of stations I used to receive. There are so many different things to watch on Netflix through the Roku player. Currently I am working my way through Torchwood, one episode after another.

Have you checked out the new channels to Roku such as Pandora (internet radio), Revision3 (internet television) or Twit.tv with Leo Laporte (lots of talk about computers and technology)?

I also highly recommend the movies that you can rent through Amazon. They have specials every week for just $1.99 and some as low as 99 cents (actually, some are as low as "free").

11. I kind of hate to rent a movie from Amazon when I'm paying for NetFlix.

I'll add it to my queue instead, most likely. Very few things I need to urgently rent. Or wait for it to come up in the 4 for $20 bins at Blockbuster. But I'll take a look-see sometime.

I did link to my Pandora, and maybe I could hook it up to my stereo for that purpose, but I kind of hate to have my TV running just to listen to music.

I do dread pulling the old "entertainment center" away from the wall to rewire these things.

13. You're right about listening to music on tv, my plasma suck the juice.

If you use an hdmi cable from the Roku box to your tv, that's all you need (if your tv uses hdmi). I run lines from it to the tvs in my 2 bedrooms.

I like Amazon to get a good movie for 99 cents or $1.99 on the weekends (you get them for 24 hours). When "Watchmen" came out I knew I was going to get it through Amazon and their site offered the online version for 24 hours if you ordered the dvd and so I did that. Twit tv is interesting if you like to watch extended casual and interesting conversations about computers and that kind of technology.

Oh, and check out "Walkabout" on Netflix streaming, it was a good movie.

15. I had asked my SO for one for Christmas, but other stuff came up . . .

and now I just went online and bought one! We have wireless internet, and an HD tv (medium sized, not huge, but ok), and a Netflix account, so this should work for us. I got the HD Roku. I'm going to try hooking it up with an HDMI cord.
