Delta's going to $23 for the first checked bag.
It might be cheaper to just travel with a carry-on and buy whatever else you need at destination.
Donate it to charity when you leave and take the tax write off.

We spent almost two weeks at my daughter's on 4 days worth of clothes.
But we still had to check two bags.
30 bucks there, and 30 bucks back.
On AirTran.
Wonder what I could have gotten at the Salvation Army store for $60?

9. you are correct, no rule yet abt dressing in layers

i don't pay for a checked bag on delta, as i'm one of their elites, however, in the interest of saving time and not having them lose my damn bag so often, i've often been guilty of dressing in layers

make one of the layers a photo/fisherman's vest w. lots of pockets and who needs a suitcase?

i also put a pillowcase in my pocket and if it's hot on the airplane, i can stuff some of the layers of clothes into the pillowcase and instant pillow

I LIKE the pillowcase idea.
Back when I was an airline pilot I was sometimes gone for two weeks or more.
I did everything I could to cut down on suitcase (one) bulk and weight.
I bought silk skivies.
T shirts and briefs.
Only needed one change.
I'd wash them in the hotel sink with the shampoo.
Wring 'em out and then stomp them between two towels and they'd dry in a couple of hours in front of the heat/AC vent.

is because I'm lost without my pocketknife. I guess for $23 per flight, I could just buy a knife at the destination and mail it home at the end of the trip.

I have a tiny Swiss Army with nail file/blade screwdriver, knife blade, scissors, and a red key light.
I'm lost without it.
Last thing to go in the checked bag and first thing to come out.
