oops! Bear vs. Airplane
The Many uses of Duct Tape in Alaska
This is a classic example of a real Dumb Ass Move! Leaving bait in an aircraft in Bear Country is about a stpid as a one legged man entering an ass kicking contest.
During a private "fly-in" fishing excursion in the Alaskan wilderness, the chartered pilot and fishermen left a cooler and bait in the plane. And a bear smelled it. This is what he did to the plane.

The pilot used his radio and had another pilot bring him 2 new tires, 3 cases of duct tape, and a supply of sheet plastic. He patched the plane together, and FLEW IT HOME!

5.  Sealing ducts, seriously
Duct tape (really called duck tape) is now illegal to use for sealing home ducting systems because engineers have proven there is a 100% failure rate, given enough time. The properly designed stuff for sealing ducting has a different adhesive and material (aluminum foil instead of cloth) engineered to stand up to the rigors of time and heat.

8. It was called duck tape before is was ever used on ducting

Is it Duct or Duck? We don’t want you to be confused, so we will explain. The first name for Duct Tape was DUCK. During World War II the U.S. Military needed a waterproof tape to keep the moisture out of ammunition cases. So, they enlisted the Johnson and Johnson Permacel Division to manufacture the tape. Because it was waterproof, everyone referred to it as “duck” tape (like water off a duck’s back). Military personnel discovered that the tape was good for lots more than keeping out water. They used it for Jeep repair, fixing stuff on their guns, strapping equipment to their clothing... the list is endless.

After the War, the housing industry was booming and someone discovered that the tape was great for joining the heating and air conditioning duct work. So, the color was changed from army green to the silvery color we are familiar with today and people started to refer to it as “duct tape*.” Therefore, either name is appropriate.

Today, Duck® brand Tape is manufactured by Henkel Consumer Adhesives. After thoroughly familiarizing ourselves with the hundreds of duct tapes on the market, we have found Duck® brand Tape to be the most consistent in quality. And, we are delighted with the large array of colors that they manufacture (including camo tape and new “X-Treme Tape” which comes in hot day-glo colors).

Jim and I do lots of appearances promoting Duck® brand Tape and do so without reservation. Therefore, we go by both The Duct Tape Guys, and The Duck Tape Guys. And, we use the words Duck and Duct interchangeably throughout our web site.

So, whether you call it Duct Tape or Duck Tape... you are still using the “Ultimate Power Tool” in our estimation.

Wikipedia confirms the story.

On edit: I see you edited you post and we now mostly agree.

10. That doesn't change the fact that it "really is" named duct tape, even if it "really is" named duck
tape.

13. It's NOT called duct tape in the military, even today
We called it duck tape even thought some anal retentive idiots insisted on calling it by the proper military nomenclature, "pressure sensitive tape", or something like that, never duct tape.

17. It still is called 100mph tape
If you want to get some REAL strange looks from today's virgin-eared soldiers, ask for the fuel filler nozzle for a 5-gallon can by its correct name, which is Donkey Dick.

12. Baling wire is a rare commodity in my area.
Used to be, all trucks had a mess in the back, somewhere. Now, it's that plastic twine stuff.

Rats like to nibble on duck tape, too.

14. yeah, baling twine sucks
I have to buy baling wire at the lumberyard now - $100 for about a mile's worth - lasts me about a year, but it kicks tie wire ass!

2. lol
It looks pretty severely damaged but as long as the tubular frame wasn't compromised it should fly ok, most of the damage looks like it was just torn fabric
