physical resemblance, but Archie was the sum of his life's experiences. His outlook was the result of a lifetime lived in a certain way, in a certain environment and mindset. When Archie said stupid things, he made us laugh. When Rash Limpballs does it, he makes us enraged.

Carroll O'Connor was a fantastic actor, and an intellectual liberal too. I read his autobiography, and was impressed with his analysis of the actor's art, theater, politics, psychology, social norms, etc. He purposely changed Archie over the years and gave him redemptive qualities. He refused to let him be a static character that could avoid changing when confronted with the circumstances life threw at him over the course of a decade.

Even when Archie was irascible and grossly ignorant, we wanted him to be a better person. Unlike Rash and his ilk, Archie was working-class - one of us. In fact, what Norman Lear did was tap into a character reflecting the nascent conservatism of 70's blue collar America (and generationally, the conflicts between those born after WW1 and those after WW2) which would help give rise (along with the religious right) to Reagan in the following decade. Archie was the American incarnation of his Cockney counterpart, from the British program "Till Death Us Do Part", of which "All In The Family" was based. The Cockney character, unlike Archie, had little to no redeeming qualities, and never evolved.
