He had his famous feud with Joan Rivers, his first wife was named Joan, followed by wife Joanne, then wife Joanna. His forth wife was named Alexa,and I think he stayed married to her. (I didn't memorize all this, I looked it up). :)

3. Lily Tomlin was recently in town

and she told a story about being on 'The Tonight Show' where she felt Carson was trying to embarrass her. He kept asking her about having/wanting kids, generally making her uncomfortable, so she nailed him with "well who has custody of yours?".

Kinda made me wanna poo on him for that.

But even Carson used to slam the NBC execs in his day for their idiocies, so not much has changed. :-)

Carson was reputed to be a real tough ass when he turned on you. I don't guess you make it in that industry that long otherwise.

8. At the time of "transfer of power"...

...it was said, in a number of sources, that Leno was pissed off that he did not receive a "benediction" from Johnny. He really wanted the Holy Water, he wanted Johnny to make the sign of the cross on his forehead, and...as we all know...that never happened, and Leno was pissed as a result.

Everyone knows Johnny wanted Letterman to have the job.

Everyone knows that Johnny played the political game as well as anyone in Hollywood, but down inside, he was still that kid from Nebraska, and I'm sure he identified more with that kid from Indiana, Letterman, than he did Leno.

So Leno got the job and Johnny played along and didn't mouth off, and his final talk show appearance was a walk-on on Letterman's show. I remember it...the crowd went wild...and Johnny looked at Letterman's desk and asked "do you mind," and Letterman smiled and sort of went "be my guest," and Johnny sat behind the desk one final time. He smiled blissfully, ran his hands across it, and got an "enough of that" look on his face, snapped back to reality, smiled, and said his goodbyes to Letterman.

That was awesome. I was a kid and I didnt see it coming. He just walked on, sat in the desk and then left. I loved that he didn't do that for Leno.
