Poll question: How many times have you been shot at or witnessed a gunfight close enough to endanger you?
Edited on Mon Jan-18-10 04:40 PM by AlienGirl
Just random curiosity.

Me: shot at once, near gunfights twice.

You?

1. I'm not counting the time I was in a moving car and there was gunfire
Getting hit under those circumstances would have been unlikely.

4. Did you shoot back?
And did you hit anything?

:hi:

(my answer was "zero". I assume neighborhood friendly fire at midnight new years eve doesn't count.)

9. Drive-by a couple of years ago
They were actually trying to kill my next-door neighbor's son, but they missed him.

I remember that one time there was a shooting near you, AG.

3. Same here
Though I only recall our convoy fired upon 3 or 4 times. Seen IED's go off far more often though most of them were controlled detonations.

32. The PA asked if my humongous dose of fluoxetine was for PTSD
I said that of course it was not, because I've never in my life been through anything unusually traumatic. By that I meant: I've never been in combat, I have the good fortune of having never been raped, I haven't been kidnapped or lost a limb or died in OR and had to be brought back. Nothing especially traumatic to account for it, at all.

But I have been shot and shot others in dreams. I always seem to apologize for having to do it, too...

7. I've had idiots point guns at me three times. Once, hitchhiking: OK, it's dumb to hitch-hike.
Once, five or six years later, after work by a drunk coworker who was joking: yeah, he really was joking; it was all pleasant enough, and I got the hell out of there. Once, fifteen years after than, at a different worksite, by a terrified security guard who didn't realize some of us worked really long hours: he was scared-to-death, and IMO there's nothing worse than an armed nitwit shaking with fright

8. Twice.
Once they shot at the bar I was standing in front of while I was smoking a cig.

Second time was a running gun battle between a fugitive and about a half-dozen cops. Went right past my apartment while I was standing out front smoking a cig.

Thank gawd I've given up smoking. They'd've got me sooner or later.

16. My step son was selling weed....
and I happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

One of the guys who tried to rob the deal (a black kid)put a gun to my face told "Hoopty this mother fucker" and pulled the trigger. the gun jammed. 19 shots were fired by the white kid dope dealers. Only the black kids went to jail, I thought everyone should
later I was made a criminal afterwards. Handcuffed and told to wait for a warrant while being lectured by a sheriffs deputy about being a poor parent for 8 hours.

later, thanks to all of the kids involved LYING about the case on the witness stand, the one kid gets off.

On the anny of the shootout, I received a supoena telling me that kid was suing me for two million dollars. And using the story told by the other kids in court to say that I was trying to rob him for music posters. (I had a extensive collection, one that I cannot even look at anymore due to the memories that come flooding back). And after $$$$ money, a year, and dealing with lawyers etc, It turns out he meant to sue my step son and his Mom.

Pretty funny but my life ended the day of the shootout. depression. Horrible dreams. ABSOLUTE HATRED For my step son. ABSOLUTE HATRED for my then and now ex wife who blamed me for the shootout because I smoked pot. The fact that this kid was not in school, had never gone to High School and our house was a magnet for dope using teenagers had nothing at all to do with it.

17. My Father pulled guns on me all the time...
After he realized that he could not longer whip my ass, he started using guns. Whenever he got in an argument with me, it would end eventually with him pulling his gun. So many times I do not have one clear recollection, but many snippets of the various times.

eventually I jsut decided that the second he made a move to get one I would take him down. never hit him, but made damn sure he did not get his gun and use it on myself or my children (whom he also threatened).

21. The only time I ever saw him read ANYTHING besides a newspaper
he read a Readers Digest article about a guy, made a hero by RD, that killed his son who was on drugs. Right after he read it, he thres the mag on my bed, marked to the story, and told me that was how i was going to end up.

At the end of his life, we had to take guns away from him all the time.

24. it is very hard for me to wrap my mind around
a parent threatening a child like that - on the grounds of some kind of sick protective thought - I assume the drug thing was what motivated his obvious fear. Hard to work on big outside world problems when families are so fucked up.

25. Well he hated me from the get go...
he beat my Mom the day she came with the news she was pregnant with me. For the rest of their marriage (52 yrs) my Mother slept with a knife under her pillow.

My father loved violence. loved it. Loved to get in fist fights. Loved guns. there was no converstions it was only fear.

Thankfully I think I may have broken that cycle. me and my kids are friends... and I would never think of hurting them....

kind of strange it never happened considering some of the stupid things I have done and that I live in a pretty well armed part of the world - maybe that is part of why not? who knows?

22. Thankfully, never. I've pulled my gun only once, to protect my (now ex) wife.
I'm so very thankful that young man didn't take those next 3 or 4 steps. A .45 Black Talon would likely have taken his head clear off at that range.

30. A mugger put his knife against my neck...
as he demanded I hand him my wallet; which I did. I was really drunk and asked him for some money so I could get a taxi ride home. He went thru my wallet and handed me back a few bills. I thanked him.

And I was a camp counselor, taught older kids to use guns. But nobody ever shot at me or at anybody else. Yikes! We used paper targets... :scared:
