What nickname would you give a girl named Naomi?
My wife and I have more or less settled on naming our baby Naomi, but wonder what nicknames we or others could or would give her.

Anyone have ideas or know a Naomi who had a decent nickname?

6. Nicknames almost always depend on appearance and personality.
If she develops a love of the word no or turning down things, "Nay-omi".

Short? Omi would work best.

12. "Gnu" will be good when you first bring her home. "Gnat" will be natural while
she is still tiny. When she starts teething, you can call her "Gnash," and when that phase is over you can switch to "Gnaw." Throughout her psychotic teenage years, you should consider "Gnarly."

53. No surprise. Naomi in Hebrew means "bitter herb"
Not one of my faves. Naomi in the bible was just a kvetchy mother in law, who made Ruth's life miserable. Leah is a nice Hebrew name and so is Rachel. Most women's names aren't that great--my middle name is Ruth, my aunt is Esther, another is Judith and of course there's a Naomi in my family who's the classic Jewish busybody.

Deborah is the coolest woman in the Old Testament, but talk about overdone! I guess the point I'm making is that your daughter is gonna build an identity around her name--do you really want "Naomi" the bitter herb to be her starting point?

21. the best nicknames are spontaneously given by friends and family.
I believe if you bide your time you'll find either the perfect nickname or just call her Naomi, which is one of my favorite names.

A Naomi I grew up with had the nickname "mouse" because she kinda looked like a cute mouse. She goes by Naomi these days except with old friends like me who barely remember using her given name.

50. I had English kin named 'Naomi' and that was her beef with the name. It's got
a lot of syllables and no easier nickname.

For that reason I've never understood 'jack' for 'john'. What's the point?

I thank her gratefully for that chance. (I was a deaf girl growing up in the eighties where my peers would rather have seen me go to deaf school than go to school with them)

BTW I had a hard time at the time calling her Naomi so she settled on Omi, and all the kids she taught stuck by that nickname because it was easier for them to pronounce. Even as we are all grown up and nearing our thirties, we still call our Naomi, Omi, even though we know how to say her name now.
