Man shoots his way out of sinking SUV
ROSEVILLE, Calif. – A driver whose SUV plunged into a Northern California creek after he was startled by his hands-free cell phone device escaped the sinking vehicle by blasting out the window with a handgun.

The 28-year-old man, whose name wasn't immediately available, is an armed security guard at Thunder Valley Casino, north of Sacramento. He sustained minor injuries in Sunday's accident.

A spokesman for the Roseville Fire Department said the man was traveling northbound on Industrial Avenue in Roseville when the cell phone device activated. The driver was startled and veered off the road through the guardrail. The SUV landed in Pleasant Grove Creek.

He used his gun to shoot himself out, then flagged down a passerby.

19. Not necessarily
Mythbusters covered it a couple of years ago.

You can open a window in a submerged car by using a manual window crank.

Using a test weight of 350 lbs (equivalent to pressure differential from just two feet of immersion), the pressure of the window glass against the frame is so great that no amount of effort can move the gear. You are more likely to break the window handle.

23. No.
The window will not roll down when the pressure on the outside of the car is greater than the pressure on the inside of the car. You're more likely to break the crank. Did you ever take a physics class?

He was shooting at the pelican that made him drop his cell phone.

28. Damn
When I posted this on FB the other day, I added the comment "If you're startled that easily by your phone, maybe being an armed guard is not the career path for you."

You're stalking me dude. ;-)

15. That this story could only have been more American...
...by the driver's being a reality TV star, and eating a hot dog with one hand while shooting his way out of an SUV with the other.

GO USA!!!!!1!

21. And of course, he needs to return that 'official' and realistic 'badge'.
And 'uniform'.

And that walkie-talkie.

And those pants with the stripe.

And those shiny shoes.

And the golf cart.

And the really big flashlight.

And certainly that effin gun.

24. Yeah, I've got one of those things.
Of course, It wouldn't do me any good now because it's sittting in a chest in the hall.
I'm very glad the guy didn't die. Doesn't make me a gun lover, though. And his level of nervousness makes me, well, nervous.

30. Anyone know about Pleasant Grove Creek?
Is it actually deep enough to drown someone in a SUV? Or did he shoot his window out while sitting in six inches of water?

If his cell phone ringtone made him lose control, he should get a calmer ringtone. Maybe Barry Manilow.

:hi:
