Apple fixes a dozen holes in Mac OS X

Apple fixes a dozen vulnerabilities affecting Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 in its first security update for the year released on Wednesday.

The security update addresses several issues with Flash Player plug-in, including one that could allow an attacker to take control of the computer if the user visited a malicious Web site.

Also patched were holes in CoreAudio, ImageIO and Image RAW that could lead to arbitrary code execution and allow an attacker to take control of the computer if a malicious mp4 audio file were played, or malicious TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) or DNG (Digital Negative) images were viewed.

The release also affects OpenSSL, fixing a man-in-the-middle vulnerability that exists in the SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocols used to secure communications over the Internet. The vulnerability, discovered by researchers at PhoneFactor in August 2009, could allow someone to capture data or modify operations performed in protected sessions.

In addition, a hole in the CUPS printing service was plugged that could allow an attacker to cause a remote denial-of-service by issuing a malicious get-printer-jobs request.

...that usually follows announcements of Microsoft patches. Microsoft sucks, I'll be the first to admit it, but I worked at Apple during the Scully years, before the second coming of Jesus H. Jobs. Buncha crybabys whining about how there wasn't as much free stuff as there used to be.

Let me get this straight. You oughtright admit that you have a chip on your shoulder because you had some sort of bad experience working (at some unspecified job) at Apple, surrounded by co-workers complaining about the lack of (unspecified) free stuff, during the time period when Apple sucked it up, admitted that the existing kernel was unmaintainable and switched over to one (OpenBSD, for those following along) that actually worked.

You're complaining about a thread that doesn't actually exist.

11. I don't use any of their patches

I turn automatic updates OFF on my install. No problems because I don't use IE or Outlook and keep my security tight without using MS apps.
The main problem is Human Interface 1.0

ALL OS's have vulnerabilities but why bother attacking a minor market share. If a computer connects to the outside world, it's open to security problems-period.

Before anybody says anything, I have 8 computers running here, two with XP, two with XP X64, one with Mint, one with Ubuntu, one with Mandriva 2009. My laptop is running 7-mainly because of driver issues.

So far, none of the discovered vulnerabilities have not been exploited.

BTW, most causes of Mac OS X crashes are due to the Adobe Flash plugin... There's only so much Apple can do to prevent those.

Most of the vulnerabilies listed above are in other applications.

Microsoft's problem is that Windows is designed from the ground up to be insecure.

I don't keep up with what everyone else is using. I'm just content to use XP, Eudora, Opera and AVG. The problems I've had in the past were due to C-drive failing from unforeseen power outages around here :eyes:

17. it's the latest mac os upgrade. oy.

hosed up a lot of shit on my computer. i have office for mac, and it just will not run, and the demi-geniuses have no idea what happened. was having some photoshop issues, also, but figured that out.
oh, well, i hate word, anyway. i got open office. it's ok. just motivates me to get the few things i use office for into a program that i like better.
have to admit, tho, that i don't think i have had a video crash since the upgrade.
