3. A bit broad, but okay:

Start with "The Bicycle Thief" (1948) - B/W Italian film (and one of my favorites); a must-see for anybody.

If you like that, I can recommend others based on that (or not, if you don't like it), but you'd have to narrow your range down for a longer list.

I understand you may watch everything, but do you have even a slight preference for certain genres/time periods/etc.? Any directors you're interested in? Is screen violence a turn-off? Do you like experimental types of films? Things like that.

27. Ladri di biciclette--one of the first we got when we started Netflix--

One of the best things about Netflix from my experience is that my husband recommended we see so many Italian films. I think partially, he hoped it would help me with my Italian (slow progress, I still don't really understand 100% of what is said to me, and when I have to say anything, it's just awful. I need a drink or two to be confident enough to try out my third language.) But what it really did for me is make me love Italian movies. The movies made, esp. just after WW2, are full of such realism and such everyday matters. They are relatable. Sometimes, they are bitter--but the acting is often excellent and the stories often carry a moral.

I recommend Il Bidone--it's from Fellini. I was ambivalent about La Strada--Anthony Quinn's character is so unlikeable! But I liked Richard Baseheart's Fool. If I can recommend a Bergman film--The Seventh Seal is just mind-blowing. The best thing about Netflix is all these classic films you think you might have wanted to see are there.

For movies more recently made that you might think about giving a look--I can totally recommend Children of Men and The Constant Gardener. Both of those movies had me emotionally involved, if in different ways. (Yes, I liked them also because Clive Owen and Ralph Fiennes are like, my favorite actors, but still--awesome movies, all the same.) I caught No Country For Old Men on Netflix, too. You can mix up your old and new tastes, or just "stalk" actors you like--um, I'm guilty of that. It's great fun.

The idiots on imdb hate it. I saw it once on cable many years ago and haven't seen it since. I also highly recommend it :)

Me toooo! I avoid subtitle ones but other than that.. I'm pretty much open. Just click and watch. Be sure to come up with a rating system for yourself.

I do
2 stars = suck
3 = good movie
4 = better than usual (but had some flaw lol.. usually the ending sucked)
5 = Wow!

After a while Netflix will suggest based on what you rate. Try 'em all hehe

19. I was actually surprised at how well netflix comes up with suggestions,

although ours is a bit skewed because my wife and I use the same account - apparently we like western scifi chick flicks... :)

The little explanations do make me laugh, where they say something like based on your interest in movies X and Y, we think you'll like movie Z. It always seems like X and Y are totally unrelated, but the suggestion is right on.

12. Firefly: The Complete Series and it's wrap-up movie, Serenity.

I just finished watching it on Blu-ray, even though I own the DVDs, and it still stands up, that is if you like western-tinged sci-fi.

With Netflix, make sure that you rate what you've watched, their Movies You'll Love (heart) is pretty darn accurate, and the more you rate, the closer it gets to picking out things that you'll truly love. You can rate movies that you haven't watched through Netflix, so go ahead and do that as well.

Also, if you have one of the devices that are Netflix ready, such as a TiVo HD and have a decent download speed, you can start watching things tonight.

A few other suggestions: Dead Like Me, Seasons 1 and 2 and Dexter

This evening I finished Masterpiece Theater's "Anna Karenina" (1977 and available instantly) and really enjoyed it. See the new movies but check out some of the classics. I am very glad I have netflix!
