Peter Gabriel Says He Won’t Reunite With Genesis at Rock Hall Induction

In two months Genesis will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but fans hoping to see Peter Gabriel sing with his former band for the first time in nearly 30 years are probably in for a disappointment. “As far as I know, I’m definitely not going to sing,” Gabriel tells Rolling Stone. “I learned at our last reunion that you can’t just get up there. You have to rehearse.” Gabriel is actually not even positive he’ll be able to attend the March 15th induction ceremony in New York, since he’ll be in the midst of rehearsing for a European solo tour. “I’m trying to find a way to do it,” he says. “It’s not easy. If I can work it out, I’ll go.”

Five years ago Gabriel held a meeting with the classic Genesis lineup of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Steve Hackett to discuss a possible staging of their 1974 prog-rock epic The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. “Initially I was open to it,” Gabriel says. “But then it seemed to be growing. I know what it’s like once you’re in it — these things tend to expand. I always describe it as going back to school, since this was a school group for me. It’s a fun place to visit and see your old friends, but its not a place you want to live.” Might he be open to a reunion show at some point in the future? “Phil has had trouble with his wrists and his back, so it’s pretty unlikely,” he says.

The group is actually more likely to collaborate on a possible movie project, Gabriel says. “The only thing that might happen is that some people talk about a film of the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. If it is to happen, we might work together on that. We’ll see.”

The band thats been shambling around under that name for the last 35 yrs is a sad mockery of a once great musical group.

2. I liked "Seconds Out" and "Wind & Wuthering," and saw them in San Francisco,,,

...the "Seconds Out" album is the exact setlist from the show I saw at Winterland. That same year I also saw Gabriel's first solo tour, also at Winterland, with Robert Fripp and Steve Hunter (Lou Reed, Alice Cooper) on guitars.

The thing that impressed me most about the Genesis show was Steve Hackett...when he left and they began crafting short, sugary pop songs (with the occasional "token prog jam" thrown in to shut up older fans), I wrote them off. I remember HATING the "...and Then There Were Three" album. It possed me off, I felt betrayed, I thought it was the ultimate sell-out...still do.

During the "Seconds Out" show, Collins displayed an amazing prowess on drums. In "Supper's Ready," sollowing the "New Jerusalem" segment, he'd walk back up to the drum kit and it would be tandem drums with Chester Thompson. "Los Endos"...dear GOD, I hear that now on the "Seconds Out" album and the hair STILL stands up on the back of my neck.

It seems like a very, very smart move to let the past remain the past. Jeff Beck said something very similar in a recent interview when he was asked about Rod Stewart's decision to nix a planned Faces reunion. Rod's no longer Rod The Mod. Gabriel's no longer that guy in the giant flower suit.

8. Check out The Musical Box tribute band.

It is the only tribute band endorsed by all current and former members of Genesis. I saw them recreate the Lamb in its entirety with full costumes, props, and the three-screen slide show. They are amazing. I also saw the Selling England tour. They are wildly popular in Europe and spend most of their time there but they do surface in the US from time to time.

6. He certainly could (see my post above)...

As musicians, Genesis...whether Gabriel/Collins/Rutherford/Banks Hackett, Collins/Rutherford/Banks Hackett, or Collins/Rutherford/Banks, had the right to pursue any genre of music that amused them. I discovered the band with "Trick of the Tail" because, for whatever reason, FM "album oriented radio" played that one to DEATH. All of my friends owned the album, we were all talking about it, and when Bill Bruford sat behind the drum kit on the "Trick of the Tail" tour (along with Collins), we were hooked. Having seen Collins perform on the nexy tour, in support of "Wind & Wuthering," I'd say yes...he's one of the best drummers I've ever seen / heard.

It was the knowing that gave me an attitude...knowing what he was capable of while Genesis spun sugary pop crap like "Invisible Touch."

9. As such, a drum machine would be a fitting replacement.

Most importantly, it won't develop an ego and start an even crappier solo career.

10. Well crappy except for "Sussudio," of course.

"Sussudio" opened up a whole new realm of crap.

Kind of like on "Happy Days," when Fonzie jumped the shark, and "jump the shark" was added to our lexicon.

There's crap, and then there's "Sussudio." It's become its own category.

Truth is they are inducting the pop performing chart topping MONEY making Genesis. Not the original band.

The hall of fame is a sad joke. A monument to bad taste and record sales. AC/DC my ass.
