1. Uh-oh...
.
From Wikipedia: Discomfort (of the anal glands) is evidenced by the dog
scooting its posterior on the ground (commonly referred to as "butt-dragging")

.
.
.
Now I'm starting to worry that I may have anal glands, thankyouverymuch.
.

.

7. My dearly-departed kitty did that on the arm of my white love seat
She looked like a little gymnast on a balance beam as she dragged her ass along it. The thing is, gymnasts don't leave a brown streak on the beam.

2. Uh, actually, my cat had his anal glands become infected and burst. TWICE.
It was not pretty. And he had to wear a cone for two weeks. Ugh.

4. Pray you never do. Actually, I didn't even know what was going on until it was
too late, so I've never had the vet "express" them either. *shudder*

11. Conversely...
The one sitting on my lap is sometimes a bit, shall we say, "drippy." Every once in a while, she'll express on her own--excessively. For some reason, I don't think she'll ever have blockage issues.

5. My dog just had surgery to have one anal gland/sac removed
almost $1500. He suffered from at least one abscessed and often ruptured gland almost every year for years. During the surgery, they found that there is actually no anal sac left but only scar tissue. So, the fluid that was supposed to collect in the anal sacs, just festered underneath his skin until it got infected. Poor guy was in awful pain.

I've heard that cats can get it, too. So far, my cat has not had any problems with it.

16. I have a 20 lb. Norwegian Forest Cat who does just that very thing
Edited on Fri Jan-22-10 11:07 PM by kimi
when he does not have access to toilet paper. Which of course is not stocked by the litter box. Which of course is why he is rushed to the groomer's when he begins to make trails on the living room carpet. Because a big long-haired cat can make quite the impressive public and malodorous trail when he so pleases. And, oh, does he please.

ETA: although I do realize that it's not anal glands which are his problem, though, and I do sympathize with those of you who have pets with that particular malady. At least, I don't think that's the problem. I do think I recognize the odor.
