Canned Beer Turns 75
By Heather Whipps, LiveScience Contributor
posted: 23 January 2010 09:54 am ET

Be sure to crack open a cold one on Jan. 24, the day canned beer celebrates its 75th birthday.

New Jersey's Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company churned out the world's first beer can in 1935, stocking select shelves in Richmond, Va., as a market test. The experiment took off and American drinkers haven't looked back since, nowadays choosing cans over bottles for the majority of the 22 gallons of beer they each drink per year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Canned brewskies may have only hit shelves in 1935, but the drink's history goes back much further — at least 6,000 years, in fact, to ancient Iraq.

Though it is impossible to tell just how many important decisions in world history were lubricated by a pint or two, the potent potable has played a role in at least a few milestone events, from the plagues of medieval Europe to the founding of the United States.

12. Try this one:

The photo is of a bottle but I can only find it in a can. It's in a nitro can like your Guiness.

16. I have. I was disappointed

It had a good flavor for the first sip or two, but then it went totally flat; all the creaminess went away. Tasted like water.

If you like chocolate stout, try Omeggang Chocolate Indulgence instead.

4. Anyone remember when you had to open canned beer with a tool called a churchkey?
One end was designed to remove bottle caps, the other was to pierce a sealed can with a triangular opening. I wasn't old enough to drink when they were an essential part of the beer drinking experience but I do remember my Dad having one handy when he drank beer.

10. If any of these are what you're talking about, they're still around.

The middle one looks like the one we always used to pierce cans of evaporated milk.
My dad, however, might have prefered one like that one on the far right and used it
to open the caps on his quart bottles of Carling's Black Label.

I was wishing for the old-time cans that
one would need a churchkey (aka beer opener)
to gain access to the product inside.

18. I found an old Coor's can that was opened with a church key
at the cabin. A little rusted but it's in good shape! We have it on display at the cabin.

20. Funny story that, you may not believe this, involves beer
I worked with this woman who thought herself of the upper echelons of Richmond society (she wasn't even close) who stated as a fact of nature that:

"The only proper time to drink canned beer is when you are helping someone move"

I can't drink beer anymore (gout) but I am familiar with the national anthem-- CRACKKassshssh :patriot:
