Even though I have a 24 inch monitor, I still begrudge browsers taking up any more screen area than is absolutely necessary, so in my quest for ever simpler interfaces, I give you my latest Firefox configuration:



I've merged the tab bar with the title bar and hidden the bookmark, menu and status bars. They're still available when needed. For example, the status bar appears whenever I hover over a link or I'm loading a page but then it goes away. I've also removed unneeded buttons that have keyboard equivalents like Reload (F5), Home page (Home) and Stop (Esc).

1. On a Mac? The rounded boxes aren't Windows.

I love Firefox but I didn't know you could get it THAT lean! You certainly can't get IE to eat that little space.

2. I maximize my Opera browser to the full 24" as I like to fill the screen

Then I can "float" windows as I see fit, maximize others, and navigate with the panel on the left and still have more than enough room for most pages :D

4. F11 is still there

but F11 loses too much information. I still want the basics, the basics being: the address and search windows, the tab bar, download helper, page saver, no script, tab counter, forward/back buttons (as indicators mostly) and the status bar pops in and out of existence as needed.

5. I don't use the F11 function, but do hide the taskbar.

I just like to have my browser over the whole screen. The tabs panel is adjustable for width so I can see the page titles and organize the few hundred appropriately ;)

6. My monitor is too wide for that

For the first time ever, I no longer maximize all my windows unless I'm watching a movie.

7. I think we have the same sized monitors, 24"

and I find it only too wide for things like EditPad, Eudora and some games. Graphics programs are perfect for this larger screen, so they especially get maximized. Word centers the page in the middle, and masks out my distracting desktop image (it's fine to look at on its own, but not something I want to distract me from other jobs ;))

9. I'll do that if I'm reading a pdf

Two pages side by side fill the screen and remain readable. But a single full-screen block of text would be something like 256 characters and that's too wide for me.

11. I don't mean that the text is all the way across the page.

I keep Word set in "Print layout" and can have the thesaurus open on the side without losing any width to the page. That's why I'll "float" webpages, as too many sites will allow their text to go the width of the screen, like here on DU :P
