Why the hate of wheat in beer?
I know many folks who will drink Budweiser, but if the beer has wheat in it, they go bonkers

Yet there is nothing as good as a fresh Wheat Ale...or the Hef on the right moment...or a Belgian Wit with fresh fish

1. To me they seem too rich or too sweet or something.
I could grow into them but someone needs to tune that heavy sweetness out of it and make it a little rougher on the tastebuds.

7. Ok.. now you got my attention.
Or even wheat ale with just a sprinkle of cayenne pepper.

Alright then. I need to rethink my position here.

I'll admit that.

3. I just don't like them.
Edited on Sat Jan-23-10 07:54 PM by Chan790
They're for the most part, fruit-pairing beers and I've simply never gotten into them. When I was in college, years before it became hip, a sample-girl (a promotional model of sorts) in a bar foisted a free Blue Moon on me...and I nearly retched when I got it into my mouth. I like my beer to be bitter and tart (I drink a lot of green-apple ciders if you're curious about the combination) and this was sweet and mildly-lemony. My brother is a bartender/chef...he's recommended that wheat beers actually go down really well for people who prefer a strong beer with an applejack chaser. That works for me...but I'd rather pass on the wheat beer and just have three-fingers of applejack instead still.

5. But not all Wheat Beers are Hefeweizens...
And Hefeweizens are a broad category...the German Hefeweizen is radically different (aged and complex) than the American Hefeweizen (quickly turned around)

And then you have the Wheat Ale...

And the Belgian Wit beer...

Granted Blue Moon is not great, but its not horrible either.

But given the perfect Wheat Beer...Think Three Floyds Gumballhead

Or Ommegang Witte

4. They think butt-wiper is actually beer
Why hate wheat beer while drinking rice beer? It actually tastes like beer.

They hate it because they can't pronounce hefeweizen, without sounding like "Hey fey wee zan"

6. True that...
Not that rice can't be a perfectly fine addition to the malting process, but not the way AB does it.

8. I hear you on that
I'll take beer with rice added, not rice beer.

9. Hitachino Nest does some amazing beers with rice
Red Rice Ale, or their aged rice beer - where it sits in Sake Casks for 6 months....

12. Budweiser has rice added as an adjunk
I still adhere to the Reinheitsgebot when I brew beer. Water, hops, barley-malt and yeast.

13. I love a good stout or porter
Check out this one, it's dessert! And it's beer! It tastes like a mocha with a kick.

It's available at Trader Joe's in a can.

14. Loves me some Youngs!
BTW - try pairing that with ice cream. Just vanilla ice cream. Trust me, it works.

15. Sounds wonderful...
I might just pick some up tomorrow to try that. Trader Joe's sells a 4-pack of the cans -- I'll be sending one to my nephew for his BD gift next month since he can't get it where he lives. He's gonna love it (and if he doesn't, his wife a rabid chocoholic will!).

16. Have you tried Alaskan Smoked Porter?
I think I like it better than the Young's, which can seem a bit sweet. This is just pure awesome!

17. Hefs make me gag, all of them. I've had some ok wheat beers
but the pale stuff bores me anyways. Wheat is just too lite.

18. Drank weissbier several times in Germany...
.
...and, although I could drink bathtubsful of regular
pilsner, I had trouble getting the second weissbier down --
I seem to remember something someone said earlier in the
thread... it was just too sweet and rich.
.
All of a sudden, I got a mental picture of the "beer milkshake"
in "Cannery Row".
