Two Donald Sutherland movies
and Two Kenneth Branagh movies

I highly recommend the two Sutherland Movies for his acting.
I also highly recommend the two Branagh movies because they are damn good. Branagh really shines in these movies.


Wait Until Dark is as good a thriller as one could ask for. Audrey Hepburn is wonderful, and Alan Arkin is deliciously evil. I had a terrible crush on Audrey Hepburn.





Of course Leslie Caron caught my fancy too. I'm a sucker for dancers.

A bit too sentimental for the material. One of Spielberg's biggest faults is he gets far to sentimental.

I agree on Kubrick though. I should have added 2001 and Full Metal Jacket to my list.

The Wire seasons 1-5. It blew my mind at times. Doesn't use score to manipulate emotions but does it with powerful camera shots. Kind of slow at times but almost every scene comes into play later on even if it doesn't seem significant at the time.

I had two suggestions for films that have stuck with me over the years but apparently, Netflix only has one of them:

Brimstone & Treacle - A sort of gothic, cautionary tale concerning a sociopathic con-artist and the all-too-trusting couple who are the target of his scam.

The other from the 80's stars another rock star, David Bowie. Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence is more than haunting. It is the disturbing, tragic and beautiful story of Allied prisoners of war in a Japanese camp. If you can find it, get it and watch it.

One of my favorites of the last ten years.

Another great German film of the decade is Nowhere in Africa, about a German Jewish family that relocates to Kenya early in the Nazi era.

Norway has been turning out some fine films, too.

The Other Side of Sunday--A young girl growing up in a fundamentalist family

Sons--A young man who was molested as a child realizes that his abuser is back in the neighborhood and starting in on a new victim

The Kautokeino Rebellion--Relations between the Norwegians and the Arctic Sami (Lapp) people in the 19th century.

I'm not sure that the last two are on DVD yet, but they should be.

Still in the northern countries, Man without a Past from Finland is about a man who loses his memory and all his I.D. in a mugging and is reduced to living in a homeless shelter. (No, it's not depressing.)

It happened a long time ago. I had a girlfriend who thought "Eraserhead" would be a good date movie. She was pretty keen on "Das Boot" too, in the original German. And sadly I understood German well enough then. Oh, and let us not forget "Betty Blue" or "Blue Velvet." And there was some "art" stuff too that still lives on in my nightmares commingled with dreadful past realities. You know, suicides and attempted suicides really suck. Nope, not in my bathtub, never again. I've touched cold flesh.

Most hideous movie ever? "The Big Chill" I vowed NEVER fucking no way in hell so help me God would I let anything like that ever be my life.

So I ran away screaming naked skin and hair on fire from the inferno I was building, took a deep, deep breath, put on some clean new pants, breathe, breathe, and then I met my wife. She likes silly romantic comedies and Star Trek. This makes me very happy.

58. The Usual Suspects and Memento

The Usual Suspects totally blew me away! Never saw it coming! I went to see it the first day it came out and saw it once more in the theater (and again as rentals). I was responsible for a good number of people seeing that movie because I couldn't stop raving about how great it was.

Memento was wild! I saw that three times just trying to figure it out.

Edited to add: Another one was "No Way Out," an earlier Kevin Costner film. That blew me away twice--that he was Yuri and that there actually was a Yuri!

Based on an Inuit legend, it depicts the pre-Western contact way of life. I found it confusing at first, because everyone was not only dressed exactly the same but had their hoods partially covering their faces. Still, it's a fine example of "stories I've never seen before."
