5. The difference between Leno and Conan

Leno's humor revolves around putting down other people and not in a zany over-the-top insult-comic way like Don Rickles. Jay mocks people's intelligence (which is kinda ironic, really). Jaywalking? Putting down stupid people. Sidewalking? Putting down stupid people. Headlines? Putting down stupid people. Celebrity Jeopardy? Putting down... Wait, didn't he steal this from SNL? Anyway, this type of humor has broad appeal because it allows morons watching at home feel superior for a couple of minutes. "Hey Martha, that guy doesn't know the capital of California. What an idiot!" This is because the last thing the average television viewer wants to see is anything that challenges them.

In contrast, Conan is able to make himself the butt of jokes (something you will never see the pathologically insecure Leno do, ever), more willing to take risks and seems to enjoy sharing the spotlight with other actors and comics. Here's a three minute montage of some of the sketches/characters Conan's created in seven months. Compare and contrast with anything Leno's done in seventeen years:
