1. I still have my (first generation) iPhone..
I love the phone, do not like the att network - too many dropped calls and static on the line...I'm waiting for the iPhone to move to Verizon who has a much better network.

There are plenty of apps to make it even more useful.

I'm hoping, though, that the itablet (?whatever) will not require a data plan and
will be wi-fi or at least an ethernet capable touchscreen.

7. Currently AT+T is the only company that offers the iphone
FYI, I've had NO PROBLEMS with call quality or dropping of calls. And the Verizon ad about not getting reception very many places is bullshit. I've done a lot of travelling and haven't had many problems.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my iphone...

37. Oh its just nice to have a phone, ipod GPS/maps
in one. That GPS alone is fantastic!! It's much easier than fooling with a map.
As for AT+T I like their roll over minutes..I am very uneven in my calling patterns so I like having the unused stuff carry over.
I also love some of the apps like shazaam which tells you what a song on the radio/tv/computer is who sings it and gives you info on where you can download it....

10. Rumor has it that AT&T may be losing their exclusivity tomorrow
Edited on Tue Jan-26-10 02:17 PM by Rob H.
Apple's hosting a media event at which they're unveiling a new product (most likely a tablet computer that's like a larger, revved-up iPhone) and it's also rumored that they may be announcing the availability of the iPhone on other carriers. Verizon and T-Mobile have been listed as likely candidates, but they might not be offering the iPhone until this summer.

It's still just a rumor at this point, though, so take it for what it's worth. :)

Edited for clarity.

Interesting. I'll have to follow up on that. We have T-Mobile right now and it's been great since they upgraded their facilities here about five years. No problems at all and we're 'way up in the hills.

12. Get the iPhone 3GS, the newest one.
I have an older one but am still in love. The only thing that can be criticized, and is in this thread, is that you have to have AT&T as a carrier in the US.

Other than that, it's very intuitive where, say, a blackberry is not. You can surf the web, watch youtube videos, manage your emails easily and can spend some time having fun with applications for it. Also very easy to have some of your documents always handy.

21. It has a better camera and video ability,
although I just got an app for my old one that does video, although with a much lesser frame-rate. But its kind of neat, and besides, for the real stuff I use a digital SLR and a camcorder, anyway. Besides this, mine can do anything that the new one does. So perhaps you'll get a bargain somewhere. ;)

But it's what I'd buy for my mom. :hi:

It was a great little machine and was taken off the market when IBM figured out that businesses were buying it instead of the bigger ones.

23. I'm not sure I understand the 'different choices.'
So far, only two models have been built (the older one just had different storage size, an 8 GB and and a 16 GB one,) and the new one has up to 32 GB. Which is probably overkill. I have the 16 GB, and about 500 songs on it, 10 movies and some videos and around 200 pictures and some books/audiobook and still have about 10 GB left.

30. The 3g doesn't have video
The 3gs does, you can shoot, edit and upload video straight to YouTube with the 3gs. The only othe difference is drive space, 8, 16, or 32 gb drives.
I got my wife a refurb 3g for $49 , don't know if they have any of those left.

31. There's a new app for video for it:
http://www.ividcam.com/ The frame rate isn't as good as the one for the 3GS, but if you turn the sound off, it's nice to play around with it. I think there's both a free and paid version out.

34. They are awesome. As an owner and former salesman of them I can tell you a few things.
There are really only two models: the 3G (if you can still get them) and the 3GS which is the newest. The 3G comes in either an 8GB or 16GB (mine) form. Really that just depends on how much stuff you want to put on them. I have about 300 songs, a few videos about 80 apps, 1000 text messages and 100 contacts and I have just about used 2GB so an eight is plenty. With the new upgrade done through iTunes the 3G now does picture messaging. The 3GS comes in either a 16GB or a 32GB. The 3GS is a little different in that it has a few more things like a battery percentage meter more memory video and voice control. They are the easiest phones to learn as the are no menus. everything is an icon. You want to call some one, touch the picture of the phone. Touch the picture of the address book to look up someone. I love mine and never want a different phone. Easier than a Blackberry but there are no buttons other than the home button which returns your view to the front page of apps. Some people prefer buttons. The virtual keyboard is the easiest to use. I have had other touchscreen phones and this is the best by far.

36. Wait until they are available on other carriers besides AT&T. Unless you have fantastic
AT&T coverage in your area and anywhere you travel regularly. I switched from Sprint to AT&T so my husband and I could get iPhones. It's a good thing we waited a bit though because it turned out that AT&T was for SHIT in our area. Our area is the smack dab on the north side of Chicago, by the way, hardly the boonies or anything. I couldn't make or receive a single call in our house without it dropping, cutting in and out, or just never connecting. It was the worst. And I work from home so that was a real problem.

I spoke to lots of friends and nobody has good service in Chicago, even those with iPhones just kinda put up with the terrible service. That doesn't work for me because I need to be able to call my clients.

I will give AT&T some credit though, even though I had over a year left on my contract they let me go with no fees. I gave them a few months to try to improve the situation and, when it didn't, they let me go with no problem. I'm on T-Mobile now and get much better service. I have the MyTouch (Google/Android phone) and I'm very pleased with it. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the iPhone but it's got a LOT. And I can make calls, what a bonus!

I'm hoping that T-Mobile gets rights to the iPhone so when this phone is ready to be replaced I can switch. Until then, it's a pretty great phone. It's got lots of apps and the gps works great. It got us all over Hawaii last month, never had to use another map.

I had a 1st gen and now a 3GS. I haven't had a problem with either one (I use the first one as as an iPod Touch now). My friends with Droids and the other iClone drool over the apps on my phone, and my iPhone friends are as happy as I am with theirs.
