7. I will never, ever, ever understand why Toyota stopped making sporty cars.

Supra? Dead. Celica? Dead. MR2? Dead. Those cars were all very good in their respective genres. Hell, even today the Supra is still one of the holy grail cars for tuners.

Granted, Lexus has gotten into the supercar business this year, but no sporty cars anymore. Well, they did briefly do a slightly hopped up version of the Matrix, but it's just not the same.

119,000 miles 31mpg highway 26+ in town, and that's with a camper top. I'll drive it until it wears out-which should be another 250,000 miles.

60. After a couple of months...

...I was able to keep it in the mid-fifties, commuting in warmer weather. I was able to push it into the low sixties if I really tried.

In the coldest weather, I count on 51 or thereabouts. Since my 75,000-mile maintenance a few weeks back, though, it's stuck in the upper forties. Don't know what's draggin' me down, but it's probably nothing the service center will admit is a problem.

I hate to correct you but "cash for clunkers" wasn't a company bailout it was a customer bailout and many many dealers actually lost money on the cars themselves. They made money if people bought cars from them. And if Toyota had the most customers, that's because people love their product. They didn't get the actual bailout that GM and Chrysler got.
Maybe when the big three show that they've gotten past weighing human lives vs. how much a lawsuit would cost them, would I buy something again.
At least Toyota is doing the right thing by stopping production. No one in Detroit has EVER shown any hint of concern for anything but the bottom dollar, even to screwing their own employees when times got tough.
Nope, I'll never buy American.

Furthermore the tax concessions and price dumping they were allowed in the 80s more than equals any 'bailout' (which were actually loans) domestic manufacturers got in 2009.

Add to that, Japan has its own 'cash for clunkers' program which excludes US made cars.

You ignore that Toyota lied about the cause of suddenly accelerating vehicles and basically blamed the consumer, who in some instances died. Toyota cares about NOTHING but making money, just like every other corporation in the world. It's pathetic the lengthen that some Toyota fans will go to defend the company.

It runs fine and does everything a truck needs to do. I'll probably still be driving it when the last gasoline station goes out of business.

After that people will only be able to buy gasoline in 10 liter cans at the antique auto shop if they have the proper hazardous material license and liability insurance. Then maybe I'll park the truck in the yard for my great grankinds to play in, or if the world goes all Mad Max on us, I'll make some wicked swords and knives out of the suspension springs.

Still runs well while there are almost no American cars that old still on the road.

It's rusting, and I'll have to replace it in the next year or two, but I will almost certainly buy another Toyota - used (as all of my cars have been).

Despite the current issues with some models, Toyotas have been one of the most reliable brands over many years, and I have no qualms about buying another one.

My other car is a Hyundai, which is pretty good now that some of the problems have been ironed out with it (had some major issues early on) - and actually have to take it in next week due to a recall, but it doesn't make me like Hyundais the way I do Toyotas.

I don't get the people bashing Toyota here. It's always seemed to me that while the CEOs of American car manufacturers were lining their pockets, Toyota was putting large amounts of money into R&D and making better, more reliable cars - instead of the junk most American companies have been turning out. I won't buy American just to buy American - I don't want to be taking my car to the shop every month.

And...doesn't seem to me it makes a damn bit of difference on the American/foreign car continuum buying used anyway. I only take my cars to a dealer if there's warrantied repairs or a recall, anyway.

At 190,000 and still cruzin along (Drove 100 miles yesterday) and it is probably the only one in this part of the country that isn't rusty!

You will have to pry my cold dead fingers off the steering wheel to get this away from me!





I've had 4 of 'em...1979 Corolla,1980 SR5 Pickup,1986 Corolla (The one above) and a 1989 4Runner.

Three of the four have gone over 300,000 miles,I sold the 4Runner with 484,000 miles and got $800 bucks more than I paid for it!

For the Anti-"Yota" crowd...I have had over 50 automobiles in my life,ranging from a 1956 36hp VW to a 1963 Chevy II with 500+ Hp. and yes I'll buy another!

As to recent news on Toyota's quality - if you mean ASIDE from the current recall...you're right. But not because I'm a Toyota lover, but because I have 2 cars that run (for now) and no funding to replace either of them - so paying attention to car quality isn't a big concern right now.

When it comes time to buy another car - I will do what I always do. Research. Particularly checking reliability ratings in Consumer Reports. And when I do, if the most reliable cars in the price range I'm looking for turn out to be Fords or Chevys or anything else, that's what I'll look for.

I was talking about the long-term reputation of Toyota for reliability. I still think that means something - but when it comes down to the actual reliability numbers, which are what matter to me, I won't be buying a Toyota just for being a Toyota. If there's something better, that's what I'll get.
