On no particular day or time, I can see any number of dozens of people out there on weekdays, non-lunch hours, running, walking their dogs, chatting with friends, fishing, etc.

my questions is: WHAT THE FUCK DO THEY DO FOR A LIVING AND HOW DO I GET THEIR JOB!!!!!!

1. Hey Javaman!

My husband and I are going to be spending a long weekend in Austin in about a month. Do you have any suggestions for areas to stay? We've been looking on TripAdvisor and two Super 8 Motels outside of town are the highest rated properties. I find that hard to believe. I don't need the Four Seasons but an interstate motel? Something seems not quite right.

If you have any suggestions for cool neighborhoods or other fun things to do, I'd appreciate it. We really hate tourist traps and chains, and shopping is not my #1 activity. It seems like that's all you can find when you do searches on travel destinations these days. I have plenty of shopping and chain restaurants in Chicago if I so desire, I'd like to see what makes Austin unique. Live music is one thing, I know that. But where to go? Are there cool open air markets around? Funky stuff like that?

4. There are two great "motels" located on south congress...

Both are centrally located and right in the heart of town.

They are both located on south congress. Music venues nearby (The Famous Continental Club for one), cool austin shops with in feet of your room. (10,000 Villages is one of my favorite places)

You can catch the bus or walk straight to the capital. (you will be able to see it from the front of either motel).

Great places to eat, once again, just feet from you room. In fact right next to the Austin Motel, is El Sol Y La Luna. A wonderful Mexican restaurant.

Honestly, staying at either one of those locations, you can not go wrong.

and about 1/4 to a 1/2 mile away is town lake. Hiking, biking, walking, running, canoing, paddle boats and rowing.

Plus if you are up for it, a nice drive to the hill country is always a great day trip. Winery's and local BBQ are always a good combo. ;)

P.S. first thing to do when you get here, pick up a copy of the Chronicle. It's the local free publication for everything that's going on here. It's everywhere and if you can't find one for some bizarre reason, just ask a local, they will know. it's a must have when visiting!

We were actually considering the Hotel San Jose but weren't sure if it was a good pick so thanks for the info. And thanks for the other info as well!

Oh, and I love 10,000 Villages! There's one about 20 minutes from my house right near my husband's office.

The weather for the next few weeks here will be really nice.

This is actually the best time of year to visit (in my opinion), the heat is normal, not like surface of sun-like heat in the summer. ;) lol

I love the hill country too, but when you get far out near Round Rock, it's still suburbia even if it's all pretty and hilly.
