Over the past 35 years we've had three toyotas and had damn near zero trouble with them. However, our next new vehicle will most likely be a Chevy truck, mine is pushing 11 years old.

6. Yup. TM has a 2004 Camry and we're getting ready to gift
that car to the boy and get her another one. It's a damn good car. No problems, minimal expense with maintenance.

Honestly, if their van was larger, I would have bought that instead of the one I did. Toyota rocks.

After all the exploding gas tanks and the rollovers and the stuck throttles and the various reasons they've had to recall their deathtraps over the years?

9. Toyotas are about the most trouble free cars you can buy, except
for Honda. And Lexus and Infiniti and Acura.
What car has not had recalls? None.
And these were rather minor recalls.
My Hondas were all made in Ohio. That's still in mer ka, isn't it?
But rather than buy one country or another, which is no longer the case, I'd rather get the best deal for me, and buy quality.
Ergo, Toyota and Honda.

19. Nonsense
Guess you're willing to overlook Toyota's quality issues and pretend like they aren't happening.

"And these were rather minor recalls."

You really think defects that have resulted in deaths are minor?

22. Ford and GM are far worse. No car is perfect. Nonsense is thinking
Ford, GM and Chrysler are worth a whit. They aren't.
Toyota and Honda are known world wide as top quality and Ford, GM and Chrysler are known world wide as low quality. That has been going on for quite a long time. Now maybe they don't know that in the rust bucket/belt, or they don't want to believe it, but it's nonsense if you don't know it's true.

The US automakers make great vehicles. Ford particularly has been doing great. You continue to push this untrue idea that foreign vehicles are superior in quality....they just have better PR.

Did you see that Honda is also recalling about 640,000 Fits because they are a fire hazard? I'm sure you happened to "not see" that thread.

You spent much of last year bashing the US automakers in just every GM/Chrysler thread that got posted. Yet I find that you are conspicuously absent from about 99% of the recent Toyota threads. I guess you, along with the many DU Toyota loyalists, can't handle being confronted with information contrary to your opinion.

"Now maybe they don't know that in the rust bucket/belt"

Nice to see you're one of those Californian's with that self-centered sense of superiority where you think the world revolves around you...and that the rest of the country is less informed and less important. I'm sure most Californians are pleasant, great people. But the few like you give the state a bad name. That comment says a lot about you.

36. ...What?
Ok So we were talking about a car and now you are discriminating Calfornians... hmm yeah that makes sense.

It a fact that majority chose Toyota rather than Ford, well, at least that's what it used to be.
They did have one of the best selling car in America.
But a quality? Yeah that is a whole different question. I don't think Ford cars are bad quality at all.
But as a long time Toyota user, I personally think company makes a dependable car, and they will resolve this issue sooner or later.

And I assume you understand that these cars are made in America.

I understand that it is a big issue, but I think media is going way too crazy on this.

The poster I was talking to referred to my area as the "rust bucket" which was rude and uncalled for. That same poster is from California and pushing the "fly over state" mentality I've see from some Californian DUers.

"And I assume you understand that these cars are made in America."

Some of the Toyotas currently having problems are made in the US...in non-union factories.

46. Not any more
Toyota is losing whatever mojo they ever had on build quality, and the trucks have been rust buckets since the Hilux. Their 18RC engine was notorious for needing a valve job at 30,000 miles. Ford surpassed them in the quality ratings 2 years ago, and they had rigging the quality ratings down to a science - why do you think "routine maintainence" costs $500? And rollovers? You could'nt find a 1st gen Toyota 4x4 in the salvage pool that had'nt rolled over!

25. Here are the US employment numbers for 1998 vs 2008 for the
Big Three US automakers and the top three Japanese automakers:

1998 2008 Change
General Motors Corp. 177,000 104,000
Ford Motor Co. 173,899 84,700
Chrysler LLC 123,180 66,409
474,079 255,109 (218,970)

Toyota Motor Corp. 25,622 36,632
Honda Motor Co. 17,000 27,000
Nissan Motor Co. 9,000 14,500
51,622 78,132 26,510

A lot of the foreign car lovers on this site have often used the talking point "My car was assembled in America so buying foreign doesn't really cause any economic dislocation in the US". Well, that's a lot of nonsense - as the numbers above make clear.

To answwer the OP's question, I have never bought a foreign car and never will - because I'm well aware of the impact the Big Three's declining market share has had on US employment.

52. When Ford decided years ago
That they would rather pay out WRONGFUL DEATH LAWSUITS than fix potentially deadly problems with their cars because the lawsuits were CHEAPER, I saw how much the big three cared about their customer. I've owned one American car (which collapsed after LESS THAN 50,000 MILES WHILE I WAS STILL PAYING ON IT) and I'll never buy from the Big Three jackasses again. Anyone who thinks "Buy American just cause we are American" is a selling point with me is sadly mistaken. There are plenty of bad companies in this country I'd rather not support.

Lots of GM cars are built in Canada. The Chevette was built in Mexico oh those many years ago. Do you research before you buy to make sure they are 100% built in USA? Just curious.

and often times no recall is needed because it broke down within a year of the end of the warrantee and was too expensive to waste more money on.

20. In 2009, GM recalled 1.5 million vehicles made between '97 and '03.
In 2009, GM recalled 1.5 million vehicles. All other things being equal, it seems to me to be little more than six of one and half a dozen of the other.

But then again, as I neither wear patriotism on my sleeve nor drive my patriotism to work, it's a non-issue to me.

27. Can't rightly say
I don't have any plans to buy another car for hopefully at least 10 years. By then this recall will almost certainly have been fully sorted out. Only time will tell whether this is indicative of an overall quality issue or a poor design or programming issue.

At this point, I would say that this recall will have no effect on whether I would, in the future, choose a Toyota or not.

I would prefer to buy American. But I would prefer to buy durable. My favored brands had been Pontiac and Saturn, with props to the early 90's dodge Caravan. Right now, I am not impressed with GM overall. My parents have been loyal to Chrysler forever, despite the fact that they keep getting junk, and I do not care to follow those failed footsteps. My wife is strongly prejudiced against Ford ever since her Focus decided to spontaneously combust. Kinda leaves me in a hard spot for the domestics.

and I'm even less interested. Even when I was considering buying a car, I decided against them after looking over the models. I like the Prius, but found it pretty expensive.

I find their cars for the most part dull and overpriced (few features in lower end trim levels). And now that quality is questionable, I see no appealing factors.

37. Already had my bad experience with Toyota.
Lexus RX300. Horrible noises from the valve train. Bad power steering rack. Various failed engine sensors. Right rear door lock actuator failure. Known engine sludge problem that Toyota would barely acknowledge. Known early transmission failures that Toyota would absolutely not acknowledge. Poorly designed key fob that broke on every one of these models. Premature wear of the front strut bushings causing noise while turning the wheel. Premature failure of the engine mounting bracket causing a loud thunk on deceleration.

All these problems were very common on the RX300. I happened to get all of them with the exception of a failed transmission.

47. Yes.
My parents have driven Toyotas (a Tercel, a Corolla, 2 Camrys) since the mid-1980s. Each one of them have lasted over 200,000 miles (except their newest one, which is "only" at about 150,000). They've had zero major problems and very few little ones (aside from standard maintenance). I currently drive a 3-year-old Scion (a Toyota brand), and the only problem I've had with it is a need to replace the tires fairly often. But I knew that when I bought it, it has sports car tires that aren't made to last very long, particularly on Los Angeles streets.

As for the recall, I challenge anyone to come up with a car company that hasn't had a large recall. As long as Toyota figures out what's going wrong and fixes it, I'd have no problem buying one.

That said, I'm paying attention to the new Ford Focus, which is actually nice to look at. It looks like a Toyota, actually. If the Focus is a reliable car a few years down the line, I'd be happy to consider buying one of those as well.

Barring accidents, of course. By then, all the used Toyotas should have had all the recalled parts fixed, so I'd consider it - and by then I can compare the current new models of Fords and Chevrolets in terms of reliability and longevity.

My current Corolla is 11 years old, 110,000 miles, and runs like a dream.
