FAIRFIELD -- An off-duty Fairfield police officer was shot and critically wounded tonight while exchanging gunfire with two men he encountered driving to work less than a block from the township’s police headquarters, authorities said.

The patrolman was struck multiple times in the abdomen and found conscious by fellow officers lying outside his vehicle at about 6:15 p.m. along Fairfield Road, an industrial and heavily traveled street near Essex County airport, said Steven Gutkin, deputy chief of the Fairfield Police Department.

1. I'm hoping we never hear of the "justice" dealt to the crims involved.
Massive vibes hoping that this officer pulls through and that his brothers and sisters on the force are quick to find the shooters.

An Anchorage police officer was shot multiple times early Saturday morning in gunfire sprayed from a passing vehicle as he sat in his patrol car on a Fairview residential street.

Police said Officer Jason Allen, who was seriously injured and underwent surgery Saturday, was in the neighborhood for an unrelated family disturbance call. He'd returned to his car when a sedan pulled alongside him on Medfra Street between 14th and 15th avenues.

The attackers opened fire without a word, police said.

The community has really rallied around him; this horrified everyone.
