4. A breathtaking anti-racism song: You have to be carefully taught
Edited on Sun Jan-31-10 01:43 PM by UTUSN
Made me tear up. I wonder who the f-ing m-f(s) were who "pressured" R&H to eliminate the song. Probably somebody in the B.F.E.E.

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II were also pressured to eliminate the song "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught", but they resisted.

“Youve Got To Be Carefully Taught”

Cable:
You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

5. i'm not a fan.
I didn't like it that much. My chorus teacher in 8th grade made us watch it over and over and over and over--maybe some of my contempt comes from there.

6. Whoa!1 "contempt" goes WAY far. I used to mock family/friends over The Sound of Music
for the BRAZILLION times they saw it, but that didn't make me deaf to lovely sounds and lyrics.

Also, I've not seen South P. in its entirety even once, and am not now since I'm always on th'puter with the t.v. on, NEVER just watching t.v.

7. you're right
Perhaps contempt was too strong of a word. I apologize =D It's just not my kind of musical, I like post-1980 stuff myself. I do appreciate it for the artistry though.
