15. Another Fine Mess

I saw this movie in a theater in the 1970's. It's the impersonator Rich Little (a regular on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show) who played the role of Richard Nixon and another actor whose name now escapes me who played Spiro Agnew. Rich Little had Nixon's impression down cold. The movie was a comedy about President Nixon and his VP Agnew who also doubled as Laurel and Hardy. The movie was in the theaters just a short time and I think that I recall that Nixon put on some pressure to have it pulled. I have NEVER seen this movie on TV. There's an incredible scene in the middle of the film where Richard Nixon looks at his face in a mirror with an overly serious expression, left side and right side and shakes his jowels back and forth. I nearly collapsed onto the theater floor with laughter.

I would dearly love to see a movie doing a similar number on Bush and Cheney, with good impersonators, perhaps with them also playing Beavis and Butthead instead of Laurel and Hardy. I'd pay a dear price to go to a theater to see that.

I agree with virtually all the choices of the other posters. I also thought Airplane, Kentucky Fried Movie, and Take The Money And Run were funny. Chaplin's The Great Dictator had some funny moments, especially when Hitler climbs the curtain in his office.

The whole cast is brilliant: Dustin Hoffman, Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange, Teri Garr, Bill Murray, Geena Davis . . . . they're awesome. Even the director, Sydney Pollock, had a role in the film and HE was funny.

Also The Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Lady Killers (the original), Kind Hearts and Coronets, Whiskey Galore, Clockwise (no, I don't like British comedies or anything), The Philadelphia Story, Born Yesterday, Peking Opera Blues, Tampopo, Smiles of a Summer Night.

Most of these are old, but I prefer character-driven comedies or really original slapstick to the gross-out comedies that seem to be so common nowadays.

You may not know:

The Lady Killers (1950s): An elderly woman is regarded as a harmless but dotty neighborhood eccentric, and she seems to be in some danger after four crooks (one of whom is Peter Sellers) rent her upstairs room as a hideout.

Kind Hearts and Coronets (1950s): Alec Guinness's character has to kill seven or eight relatives (all loony, all played by him) in order to inherit a fortune.

Whiskey Galore (late 1940s): A Scottish island is deprived of its whiskey shipments during WWII. Due to concerns about alcoholism, this movie is no longer considered PC, but it's very funny.

Clockwise (1980s): John Cleese plays a pompous (John Cleese pompous? The very idea!) school headmaster whose life falls apart in every conceivable way just because he takes a wrong turn in a train station. The accumulated disasters get more and more bizarre.

Peking Opera Blues (1980s): A madcap Cantonese-language chase through old China with the most original slapstick you've ever seen, and quaintly worded subtitles. One icky scene involving S&M, but otherwise a real gut splitter.

Born Yesterday (the one with Judy Holliday, not the one with Melanie Griffith) (1950 or so): A scrap metal tycoon is afraid that his ditzy girlfriend is not presentable in Washington society, so he hires a tutor for her.

Smiles of a Summer Night: (1956) This is the movie on which the musical A Little Night Music was based. An older man is married to an 18-year-old, but the marriage has not been consummated. He also has a pious, repressed son, a sexy maid, and an age-appropriate former mistress.
