1. What a great picture...
I have a feeling they'll relent on maintaining Hubble. Sen. Mikulski's on it as well as ALL the astronomers in the world.

21. Because they lack curiosity
and not just lack it, but actually despise it.

because wanting to know things is, apparently, unchristian, because everything God wanted us to know is in the Bible already, so there's no need for learning more things, unless somehow it helps us kill people more efficiently and/or earns money. And stuff.

I am so sick and tired and fed up and pissed off at the idiocy that is the republican/rightwing/UberChristian mindset. ARGH!!

29. Absolutely!
We've totally let them take the language of Christianity away from us, and define the arguments, and make the world think that Christians are barely literate fools who won't even accept the cold facts sitting in front of their eyes, like a mypoic family that refuses to see the elephant in the kitchen.

The left has been far too weeny-ish (and that applies to both the truly caring and legitimate Christians, and also the political left, ala democrats and etc.) and let the rightwing absorb and claim ALL the language for Christianity, patriotism, and civic responsibility, and it's DAMN time we took it back.

32. Pictures like this show the UTTER STUPIDITY of war and hatred
Shows how small we really are, how small the world is, and how much we really should just get along and f-ing deal with one another.

But on the other hand, there is truth that we have idiotic muslim f-wads who insist on killing everyone who doesn't agree withtheir narrowly (and heretically) defined definituion of muslim bullshit, so in some ways we're going to be killing eachother for quite a while.

Still, it pisses me off.

Especially a-holes like oilslick & shrub. I love "the big picture" shots like that, as they really do put us humants in better perspective.

Here's another one for you Eastcoasters, also shot from the Discovery -

33. The Cat's Eye Nebula
I just couldn't resist adding this one. It's just too incredibly gorgeous....

The Cat's Eye Nebula (NGC 6543) is one of the best known planetary nebulae in the sky. Its haunting symmetries are seen in the very central region of this stunning false-color picture, processed to reveal the enormous but extremely faint halo of gaseous material, over three light-years across, which surrounds the brighter, familiar planetary nebula. Made with data from the Nordic Optical Telescope in the Canary Islands, the composite picture shows emission from nitrogen atoms as red and oxygen atoms as green and blue shades. Planetary nebulae have long been appreciated as a final phase in the life of a sun-like star. Only much more recently however, have some planetaries been found to have halos like this one, likely formed of material shrugged off during earlier active episodes in the star's evolution. While the planetary nebula phase is thought to last for around 10,000 years, astronomers estimate the age of the outer filamentary portions of this halo to be 50,000 to 90,000 years.
