What scares you the most about driving?
For me, it's big trucks.

They scare the hell out of me on the highway. I try and pass those sons of bitches as fast as possible and get the hell out of their way!

and after that, the semis. I, too, pass them as fast as I can and get the hell beyond them. I don't trust them. Partly because they're part of the drunk/drugged up group of assholes on the road, and partly because they also are forced to drive far too long each day and are tired as well (and I don't believe the bullshit about trucking companies "limiting" their driving to 8 hours a day or whatever, either, no matter how much the government has set limits - if any business was willing to have their product shipped that slowly, they'd go with trains, which would be much cheaper).

You just need more space when dealing with them. I would have rather one pass quickly than take all day looking at the tires.

Edit: Not many drugs in Trucking because of the testing but alot of tiredness.

11. Just last Tuesday, I was driving down the interstate
and was stuck behind some idiot moran woman, in the left lane, as she took TEN MINUTES to pass two semis.

I couldn't believe her utter stupidity. She spent nearly 4-5 minutes sitting right alongside each semi because, I'm sure, she had her cruise set at 67 miles an hour and she'd be damned if she was gonna tap the gas or hit the brakes or anything else to pass the semis going 65.7 miles an hour. Since I'm intelligent, I then sat way back where I knew *I* would be in the sights of the semi mirrors, and alo far enough back that, in case in the rear semi decided to change lanes since she was in the guy's blindspot for a good 4 minutes and surely the driver could rightfully assume that no one would be asshole dumb enough to sit in a bllindspot for that long, I wanted to make sure that I had enough room to maneuver should the semi decide to chnage lanes and throw her car off the interstate.

What a stupid *@(&$#(^@@#$ she is.

Usually it's for the space directly behind the truck in case someone is following too closely. Also for backing up. They have them in RVs too.

Don't know about sonar though but some do have collision warning systems for use at night. I guess that would be sonar.

20. Yes! That was one of my fears - the idiot bitch could be killed by tire,
or by lane change, or God knows what.

And if she'd died, that's fine, take her out of the gene pool, but as I was behind her any accident she had was going to affect me (though I was smart enough to hang out well behind her, and I waited until she had FULLY passed before I even approached either semi).

When a semi passes me, I flash the lights to let them know it's okay to come back in my lane. And when passing a semi, I have the courtesy to do it quickly so they don't have to worry.

12. I'm a trucker and let me tell you something
In my seven years as a driver I've yet to meet one intoxicated driver. It does happen, but it's not as frequent as you might expect.

It's federal law that a driver can only drive eleven hour and then has to take a ten hour break. Trucking companies cannot legally force a driver to drive for longer than that. You cannot be fired for refusing to drive illegally. Trucking companies have there own auditing systems to make sure a driver stays within compliance. A trucker must keep a log book showing his hours of service. We can work no mkore than 70 hours in an 8 day period.

Most truckers are friendly, too. I know, I talk to them all the time.

16. Thanks for the info!
You're helping to change my mind.

Granted, I'd not driven much since '92 when I moved to NYC. I only drive a few days a year now, so I'm remembering mostly the old days, I guess.

But I do remember lots of stories in the late 90s about sleeping, drunk, cocaine-laden, speed-laden, and other drugged up semi drives causing accidents and killing people.

But what about the independant drivers, who aren't affiliated with a company but own their own rig?

The cynical part of me still has a hard time believing that companies were and are so totally willing to accept the new limitations on their drivers, but I trust you and what you say. You're a DUer so I trust your statements.

But I still question just how much the laws are followed and how much the laws are actually enforced, especially by the smaller companies and the independant freelance semi drivers.

And all of our driver were Indies. They may not work for a company, per se, but they do have to follow the DOT rules regarding log books, time off etc.. all of this is to be carried in the cab, and relinquished to the scalemaster (at the weigh stations along the freeway...) upon request. They also are generally required by the shippers/brokers to carry a minimum of $500,000 insurance.

I gotta admit. You can lay on the sarcasm pretty good sometimes. :)

My last trip in a rig was about a year and a half ago but I'm probably still pretty close to reality as far as the scales go.

It depends on the state and the officer. The West Coast is tougher for safety than the East Coast with the exceptions of NJ, NC, and GA.
CA, WA, and OR are the strictest in that regard.

When the terra alert goes above yellow there are way more inspections all over. But they still don't go after the companies like they should. They go after the driver.

62. Actually, I wasn't being sarcastic

I truly had thought that most truckers were caffiene/speed/whatever freaks, drugged up, over-worked, over-tired, unsafe, etc. - I remember so many stories from the 80s and 90s about the awful accidents, and the companies forcing guys to drive for 20 hours at a shot, falling asleep at the wheels, etc.

I knew the laws had been changed to limit the driving times and stuff, but I also hadn't believed they would be very effective and would be nominally, at best, enforced, and that the companies would do everythign in theri power to make sure that somehow they skirted the law to keep the trucks moving 20 hours a day, etc.

Sounds like much of my fear was unfounded, and I'm happy to hear that.

Still, I think semis should be allowed on the interstates only at night and keep the roads clear during the day for the regular people.

65. That's been proposed
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 10:41 PM by camero
The bad part was that alot of shippers and receivers are closed at night and they pitched it because it didn''t seem workable. Other proposals were truck-only lanes and using miltary time for HOS rules. Also, some companies have electronic logs where you have to shut the truck down after 10 hours.

They have cleaned it up alot from the 80s and it shows in the accident stats. But there are and probably will always be some renegades out there.

The first company I worked for in the biz, the owner was tossed in jail for 2 years for falsifying log books. It was very bad there and there were a couple of times where I drove way longer than I should have. The main point is as Droopy says, they can't fire you for not driving when it's not safe to drive. I've actually called a couple of scales and got myself shut down when I needed a break. The scale officers are actually pretty good about that.

75. California limits trucks to the two right lanes
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 11:12 PM by camero
I worked for a team only outfit for almost 4 years. I think it's the better way to go really for coast to coast runs.

A good law in Washington I think because you need the middle lanes when you're just passing through because the far right lane is mostly people getting on and off the freeway and alot of conflicts come about there.

I loved the job alot and would do it again if my diabetes ever got cured. Another thing that needs to be said is that shippers and receivers are required to give at least 5 days for long hauls even if it's a team. At least I hope it's still that way.

If you did one thing, 8-10 hours a day, 6 days a week, 50 weeks a year, wouldn't you get pretty darn good at it?

I've seen truck drivers save the lives of those around them with nothing but what appears to be a psionic awareness of exactly where every inch of their vehicle is, and how to make it go where they want it to go.

In almost every near accident I've witnessed involving big trucks and small cars, it's been due to actions by the car, not the truck. I've seen people drift into the trucks lane, people merging and expecting the truck to make room, people tailgating trucks, and COUNTLESS people cutting trucks off. Don't get me started on the cell phone talkers, kid slapping, argument having, sleeping, newspaper reading, coffee drinking car drivers.

Don't fear the Big Trucks. Odds are they are more afraid of you.

BTW, I'm not a truck driver. My car is smaller than most other cars out there. I just drive a LOT.

My worst fear, if you can't already tell, is other car drivers.

We get along fine on the road. I give them plenty of space, flash my lights when appropriate, don't do anything stupid, and we coexist without any problems.

My problems have almost always been with the little old granny ladies (the ones you can tell from the little glimpse of blue hair and the fact that all you can see are the two hands grasping the steering wheel at the proscribed "ten o'clock" and "two o'clock" positions). Them, and the idiot yuppies in their SUVs. I give these types an even WIDER berth than I do any trucker.

I've been run off the road five times in my life, and actually hit three additional times. And it was never an eighteen-wheeler that did it.

42. I drive I-40 a lot...
And I have to say my worst fear is idiots in cars. I used to worry about the semis, but it's gotten a lot better. But it's the idiots in the cars that I worry about. Especially the old idiots who drive 65 in a 70 and then try to pass. God, that pisses me off like nothing else. Because I never go the speed limit. But they're a danger to people out there. They should never leave the right lane not at least going 70. Last weekend as I was headed back, just as I was trying to pass a grandpa in a pickup, he pulled right out in front of me to pass a truck going 63. He was going 65. It took him TEN MINUTES to pass the truck. :grr: And if that wasn't bad enough, when he finally passed, it took him FIVE Minutes to get back into the other lane. Good Lord. I think they need to take old people's licenses away from them.

I've seen them run people off the road, speed, and tangle with people on purpose. A friend of mine had a really scary experience. They're rebuilding a bridge between Weatherford and Hydro, so for a couple miles, the road is down to two lanes. My best friend drives a suburban. This truck sees her truck and just before it goes down to two lanes he tries to bully her into letting him get in front of her. She couldn't. There wasn't enough time without killing herself. So for the two miles the road is down to two lanes, this bastard RIDES HER ASS. Then when it goes back to for, he rides her ass. When she gets over to let him pass, he stays even with her until almost Hinton, which is like 12 miles away. She gets off at Hinton and goes into a truck stop. She's getting out, and another trucker pulls up along side her. He gets out and follows her in. "Ma'am, are you ok? I was telling that bastard to leave you alone and grow up." He was talking to the bastard on the radio trying to help her out. He even bought her a soda and they left together and he made sure she got to El Reno ok.

For every dick trucker you meet, you meet twenty that are wonderful guys just trying to earn a decent living for their families. And most of them are kind and helpful and think about their own wives and children when dealing with cars. My dad was a trucker for a long time. I have a special respect for them because I remember what he went through. Next time you're out on the road, remember that they're just fathers and uncles and husbands just trying to earn a living.
Sorry this is so long...

43. Cell phones
People on cell phones scare the living hell outta me. Yesterday I went over to see my Mom (she lives two miles away). This guy was in front of me. He was going twenty miles below the speed limit and swerving from lane to lane. I was wondering how drunk he could possibly be at 10 in the morning! But it turned out he was on the phone!

When I lived in SF one of the news broadcasts hooked a camera to follow their reporter's eye movements. He seemed a careful and observant driver... until he started talking on his cell phone. Forget Texas Chain Saw Massacre, this was a horror movie that still lives in my consciousness.

A guy here in town has a bumpersticker that says "Hang up the damn phone and drive!". Good advice.

Khash.

44. Bad roads, drunks, distracted/tired drivers, inexperienced drivers
I drive very defensively; I am terrified to let my 16-year old drive,, I know my heart will be in my throat when she passes her test and is out on the road...
I already lost one daughter to a drunk driver and it really really scares me...

47. So many annoying things . . .
... so many road miles.

Scariest things:

Passing semis on rainy days with all the water they kick up (not their fault, I know).

Watching two semis traveling in tandem, leaving less than the space of a Honda Civic between them. Why do they do this???? I see it way too often, usually two trucks from the same company. Any insight, truckers?

People who don't use cruise control and can't keep a consistent speed. This one annoys me more than scaring me. I often end up getting off the road, stopping for a potty break, just to let them get enough ahead of me to not have to worry about them.

Like everyone else, having people sit in my blind spot and take too long to pass.

Lane-weavers. Give it a rest, people. All you're going to do is annoy people and get there two minutes earlier.

Getting boxed in by big trucks. Very scary.

It's drafting. And they talk to each other on the CB so they can react to emergencies such as sudden stops.

When they're that close, how does the back one stop in time if the front one has to stop suddenly?

That's what I worry about.

76. You can see a long way in a truck
Usually the veteran driver is in front because he can see it happening way before anyone else does. I can't say it's right because it only saves a little fuel really but I'm just trying to explain how it goes.

48. aggressive drivers
Sometimes I feel I'm the only person on the road who can wait patiently in traffic, who doesn't tailgait, who doesn't jam the pedal down whenever there's an extra half-car-length to be gained. In DC Metro traffic I am cool, collected, and terrified.

is a merge coming up and will race up the left (or right) side trying to get just one more car ahead of all. I call it, "hurry up and wait with the rest of us". :hi:

49. Tall and/or long bridges
especially over water.

When I'm on a tall bridge, I just focus on the tail lights of the car in front of me, and say stuff to myself like "halfway there, almost over," etc.

I have fears of heights and of water, and the two combined put me near the edge.

Would probably feel the same way about mountains, but never had to drive them.

66. Long high bridges are mine as well
When I lived in Fl, I hated driving the Skyway bridge (when I'd go to Tampa/St. Pete), especially before they built the new one. A section of the old bridge was run into by a boat and many drivers died when that portion collapsed.
When I went to the outer banks last summer, I did pretty well when I confronted my fear.

67. You mean this bridge?
Haven't driven that one, but it looks pretty ominous.

I don't know the name of that bridge from the tip of Fla peninsula to the Keys, but I don't think I could make it over that one. Its not high, but man, how long is that thing? Well, that might be a place to get over the phobia, huh? If I ever decide I need to get over it, lol.

82. Did a search, and found it - not 40 miles, but 24 miles
which is still pretty impressive.

It's the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway holds the distinction as the longest over-water highway in the world. The 24-mile long bridge spans 1/1000th of the earth's circumference on its trek between Metairie and Mandeville, Louisiana. The twin spans are situated 84 feet apart with an estimated 30,000 vehicles per day (vpd) utilizing the crossings. The northbound span is free to motorists. The southbound span carries a $3 levy to passenger vehicles.

The 24-mile long causeway features an average height of 15 and 16 feet over the waters of Lake Pontchartrain. Incorporated into the design are three main ship passes, where the bridges elevate to a height of 25 feet. Larger vessels can pass through two marine spans, each with a 50 foot clearance. A drawbridge for the largest of ships exists eight miles south of the north shore. The highest point of the bridge overall is no more than 60 feet.

Seven turnouts are included along the route for breakdowns and other maintenance needs. Variable Message Signs (VMS) can be found at the crossovers to alert motorists of potential accidents and other hazards. A radio station and 102 call boxes also are part of the safety precautions incorporated into the overall bridge operations.

Yes. Well, that's the new bridge. The older one (that got nailes by a boat) was horrible. They used to be side by side.

Edit: Look at this. This is what I remember.

There's quite a few really high, really long bridges there...there's one in particular that always freaks me out...while you're on it, you're looking back across the river at downtown, and it looks like you're even with the rooftops of the high-rises...in the picture, it's the one n the distance.....
