My new idea for clergy appointments
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 08:41 AM by JM
I am on the rabbinic search committee at our congregation and am amazed at the rules and restrictions in the process. It is the polar opposite of Catholicism, where the Bishop says "you go here"

As a result, I think there needs to be a National Clergy Draft Weekend. The Christian denominations get Saturday, and the Jewish groups get Sunday. Organizations can draft in inverse order of their size, and organizations can trade cash, members, and employees to move up in position. The number one pick gets to put on the tallis with the big "#1" on it, and wears the yarmulke with the congregationalo colors as he has his picture taken with the President of the congregation.

"Schwartz was a sure number one pick in the Rabbi Draft until he stumbled in the pastoral skills and torah trope in the spring combines"

I can think of a few members I would trade right now...

Later,
JM

1. works for me
they'll have to divide it up into leagues though, conservative, reform, born again, whatever.
say do you think there's a way to score the leagues during the season?
i think the batting average for for liberal denominations are better than the media would have you believe.

2. You are absolutely right
Leagues would have to be formed. Actually they already exist in the denominations. They just need separate drafts.

Clergy Combines could be held for the newly ordained, where they would ahve to preach, perform pastoral duties, and perform the lifecycle events (bris, naming, baptism, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding, funeral...)

For the free agent draft, you could use a modified plus/minus system for membership, factoring out births and deaths.

Later,
JM
