Does anyone else think that new movie "Cop Out" looks terribly derivitive and unoriginal?

I mean, wow, a buddy cop movie featuring a straight-man white cop partnered up with a wise-cracking black cop. I don't believe I've ever seen that before.







But you know, they throw in a wackily irritating con/informant (Seann William Scott) into the mix, so you know, that makes it original.



I'm sorry, but everything about this movie screams been there, done that. I guess if I liked Kevin Smith maybe I'd check it out just because of him, but I don't really care much for Kevin Smith so I think I'll be passing on this one.

6. This is a paycheck movie for Kevin Smith... sort of like "Jersey Girl" was.

I guess he'll make enough off of this to fund another "Clerks" project or maybe produce "Silent Bob Gets Thrown off a Southwest Flight" -- which could sort of be "Mallrats" meets "Snakes on a Plane" and actually be pretty funny.

17. I just got back from "Cop Out" a little while ago.

I really liked it. It certainly wasn't Kevin Smith's best film, but it wasn't his worst either. I pretty much laughed my ass off.

Have we seen a lot of this material before? Sure we have. Did it matter? Not really. I still laughed my ass off.

Smith wanted to parody the genre, without going the way of "Naked Gun"-style satire using sight gags and so forth.

So he intentionally mines the genre for EVERYTHING, including the device of having the two main cops turn in their badges in the middle of the case, and defying orders to solve the case; the sub-plot of two police rivals trying to hone in on their action but not having a clue; trouble with ex-wives and current wives; and with a nod to the most recent installment of 'Die Hard' (which included a Smith cameo), a rebellious teenage daughter.

It may be be good, it may not be - but if you think Smith made this movie with no awareness of its antecedents, think again.
