I'm on my Vista (spare me what you think of Vista) laptop and Antivirus Vista 2010 tells me that I have a trojan and that my comptuer is now under attack. They're giving me the names and locations of the suspicious files but to rectify the situation, I need to buy the software. Never heard of Antivirus vista 2010 before.

I'm running a Norton scan right now and nothing out of the ordinary is coming up.

I downloaded the progrmas, and the malaware would not let me open the files (or any).

I'm at a loss of what to do. At least I have this old desktop lying around

3. I am running the free version of AVG, cleaned up my problem.

There is a 30 day free trial version.

I am also trying System Mechanic for free for 30 days.

The laptops are running fine now.

I am not an computer expert but I am runnig Vista.

9. I had a similar problem with a program called

Internet Security 2010. Got onto my laptop uninvited. Multiple, multiple warnings of infections. It told me the administrator had disabled the Task Manager. I had???? Wouldn't let me into the registry. Apparently I had disabled that too. Silly me (even though I don't actually know how to do either task - not that I'd want to, mind you).

which I suspect will work for malware other than IS2010.

Another site I found mentioned that IS2010 doesn't just ask you for money up front to "cure" your problems. It subsequently informs that that you need to purchase a further module to let you play mp3s and view movies. Great!!! How many levels do they go to?

10. After you get rid of the malware, get rid of Norton too.

Over 90% of the infected computers I see have Norton on them-that says a lot right there.

Malwarebytes Antimalware, Spywareblaster 4.2 and Spybot Search & Destroy work pretty good on malware like this. AVG or Avast work well and are free for antivirus.

11. Reboot in safe mode WITH NETWORK and then dowload AntiMalware.

If you don't know how to do that, when the machine starts to reboot, hit F8 (a couple of times about a second apart) and you should get a screen with boot options. One is Safe Mode With Network - use that. Download the free version of AntiMalware from MalwareBytes.org and run it while you are still in safe mode. Two of the files it gets rid of will have the same name sequence of random characters in it (part of how AntiVirus hides) but will be in different directories. There will probably be two other normally named files that it either deletes or cleans.

When it is finished, reboot normally and it should be gone. Whatever you do, DO NOT give any of the AntiVirus 2010 pop-ups a credit card number. As I understand it, doing so will render your machine even more unusable and they'll have your credit card information to do with as they please. One can assume that won't please you.
