OK - should we adopt the beagle?

Yes, there are several beagles we are considering adopting. They are all cute, beautiful and beagleish.

Ever since Tigger, my Samoyed, passed, there has been a hole in this families' life.

Get a beagle, and I think the hole might be filled.

The beagle won't be Tigger - we know that and can't wait to discover this new dog's idiosyncracies.

That was a fun part of Tigger - learning what made him tick.

But on the other hand, adopting a dog is a tough job. This would be a rescue from an Animal Testing site. Yes, they tested cosmetics on this dog.

And also this is a 1 1/2 year old puppy, and still needs puppy training

1. I'm assuming you studied up on Beagles and their personalities.

And that you studied up on the possible behavior issues a dog that was used for testing might have.

If you feel that you can handle the breed and behavior issues (if any) then of course you should adopt!

Working from home all day means this dog will never have to walk it alone - or at least, not that much

interested in something. I hope you have a place with a good fence - they tend to get lost following things they become interested in.

10. The also like to dig.

My old supervisor breeds beagles for rabbit trials and hunting. They are sweet dogs and very smart, but they are hounds. Hounds tend to like to howl a lot. And, dig. One has to sink the fence a foot or so into the ground so that it's hard for them to dig under it. They really do like to sleep on top of their dog houses, too.

24. "Found- black lab puppy" notices all around our neighborhood on telephone poles

I had seen a "Lost-1 1/2 year old black lab" notice in the grocery store window, so I called the # on the "found" notice to see if it might be the same dog.
No, found pup is a female, lost dog is a male.

Our friend, Larry, down the street introduces adorable "found" puppy to my husband.-
"I was getting out of my truck and suddenly she appeared, next to me. I put up notices all around the neighborhood, but no one claims her."

I see Larry at park. He's training the pup.
I tell my husband I think Larry's wife got the puppy for him, let it out just as Larry arrived home, and pretended it just showed up.
My husband says he thinks Larry bought the puppy, and pretended it just showed up.

The puppy has been with them for a couple of months.
Her name is Lucy.

9. Yes, you should adopt a dog.

It sounds like you could provide a wonderful home to a dog. It's just a matter of whether this particular breed and dog are right for you.
I understand beagles bark a lot. If you live in proximity to neighbors, that might be a problem. However, if you believe there will always be someone at home, it is less likely to bark. So it might not be a problem.

14. Beagles are very smart dogs. And they like food.

Keep in mind that you're going to have to do a whole lot of puppyproofing to keep your beagle out of things your beagle thinks are food, which are either not food or at least not beagle food. And it will not work. Because there is no force alive that will separate a beagle from something that smells edible.

You'll spend a lot of time picking up knocked over and rooted through kitchen garbage. And buying dog-proof trash cans, which will have been designed by people not as smart as your dog.

As long as you can deal with that, they're great dogs. You just need to make sure you know what you're getting into.

16. Yep. Very food orientated. And very sweet.

My neighbor and I are watching our other neighbor's Beagle while his humans adopt a baby in Mexico. I'm used to the Beagle's antics but the other neighbor helping out for this extended trip has had her hands full as she is new to the game. Last week the dog got in to her purse and ate a bunch of chocolate. The week before that, the little beast ate 15 chicken-wings off the table. Bones and all.

That's not to say he hasn't been a handful for his regular owners and/or the other condo neighbors who leave their back door open or don't close the door behind themselves quick enough. The little sneak will sneak in on your heels and go right for the garbage.

The dog has had his stomach pumped at least once and had so much hydrogen peroxide poured down his throat it's almost funny.

Let's see. Rat poison, two pounds of fish food, several bouts with chocolate, advil, chicken wings, running around the neighbor's house with a used feminine hygiene item, running around the same neighbor's house on a different occasion with a used prophylactic.

All that said, he is very sweet and very cuddly. Great disposition. He's GREAT with kids. We call him the building good will ambassador. Everybody loves him.

The thing that makes me sick to think about is I once read they use Beagles for experiments BECAUSE of their great dispositions. Evil bastards.

29. My cousin had a howling beagle puppy

howled and howled all day long. One day someone stole him, two days later they brought him back. We think the dog thieves got sick of the howling.

They are cute though.

22. beagles are nothing like samoyeds. i would really recomment a mutt

instead of a pure bred.

beagles are good with kids and other pets but really annoying around food/cat poop/anything they categorize as edible, which is really most bodily fluids and food.

They're GREAT dogs! But, they do need lots of exercise. He solved this by teaching them to play frisbee. Wears them right out!

31. Had a beagle as a kid, he was a sweetie.

Just remember that they are hound dogs by nature and tough to train, perhaps not as house-friendly as some other dogs. He was the friendliest dog you'd ever meet, though.
