I Loved The "Tilt-A-Whirl" Ride When I Was A Child...

County fairs and shopping center carnivals were such fun!

But now that I'm older and wiser... and now that I know that all of those rides are designed TO COME APART QUICKLY AND EASILY (for transport)... I don't know if I would feel comfortable letting any of my loved ones ride on them.

2. The church near us has an annual fair....and my boys always wanted

to walk over there and ride the rides.. They were always pissed because I wuld not let them.. I have seen too many stories on tv about the "maintenance" on these rides.. When they are not operating, they don't many money..they use wire, solder guns, & even paper clips to keep them operating..:(

the Scrambler, bumper cars, any ride that dunks you in water at any point...

I was always freaked out by the ferris wheel! At the Santa Cruz, CA, beach boardwalk, they actually have a huge ferris wheel as near to the ocean as possible so when you go around, at one point, you are over it! No way; I would not have been happy with that.

13. I knew a guy in high school

He used to love the roller coasters and any fast, jerky ride, but was absolutely terrified by the Alpine Ski Lift -- you know the little three-person gondola that slowly carried people around the park roughly 30 feet in the air, at about 3 mph.

Go figure.

My brother and Grape Soda didn't mix well with a County-Fair Ride one summer when I was next to him on the ride.

Then again, I convinced my brother and parents that Ex-Lax was a divison of Hershey Chocolate on a long drive to visit my Grandparents on a summer vacation a few weeks later....

I'll take the Bumper Cars every time.

I Had to fix a ride at a Six-Flags subsidiary once.

People got hurt at the Kentucky Kingdom.

Turned out that two chains on a long roller-coaster ride streched beyond their rated limits and the timing on the whole ride didin;t exactly mesh.

The replacement chins were Switz Manufactured.

Carnival rides aren't complicated, inspected every day and aren't a problem unless the jerk next to you fills up on Grape Soda and tosses his cookies on a cheap thrill.

I'll stick with the Bumper-Cars.

Was right after a generous helping of Thrasher's Boardwalk Fries with plenty of vinegar.

The operator did us a favor and gave us an extra lonnnnnng riiiiide.

I was so sick I couldn't even puke.

10. I love the tilt-a-whirl

Other rides, you just sit there and let them do their thing. On the tilt-a-whirl, you can use body English to influence it and make sure your car catches a good spin.

When I was in high school, we lived a block away from a little amusement park. It stayed open until 11, but most of the family groups were gone well before that. My friends and I would go over around ten, and if no one else wanted to ride, the tilt-a-whirl operator would let us stay on and on, way past the usual duration. Total bliss-out!

There's an early Springsteen song with a line being on the tilt-a-whirl when it got stuck and just going and going endlesslessly. Boy did I identify the first time I heard that!

The little amusement park is long gone. After I went off to college, they tore it down and put up a shopping mall in its place. The high school kids took to hanging out there instead. It seems sad, somehow.

17. I LOVE the tilt a whirl!

Anything that really scrambles you. Big, scary, fast roller coasters. Even Bungie Slings (I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so I can't imagine what my joints would feel like after a real bungie jump). I do hate ferris wheels. Once on a double, scared spitless, I noticed the lynch pins they used were the kind my tractor dealer told me not to use because they were flimsy and prone to break under stress. If I have to go I would rather go spinning my brains out and laughing rather than facing that horrible feeling as you top the ferris wheel.

loved the Tilt-a-Whirl, the Scrambler, the merry go round, the swings ... but put me on a ferris wheel, especially the double one, and I'll freak out!

I love the big coasters too, Cedar Point is my favorite amusement park ... went there many, many times. Last time I went, about 8 years ago, I don't know if it was age or the heat/humidity, but I got quite sick. Luckily, not pukey sick, but just felt really, really bad. I had to stop riding coasters and go watch the shows!

Anyone else experience this with age??
