I saw more movies than I usually do, including nominees. Avatar most recently, and blown away by the special effects. Next time, however, James Cameron should just cut to the chase and make Snidely Whiplash his villain. His movies have no subtelty whatsoever.

Love Michael Moore. "Capitalism: A Love Story" wasn't his best, but it sure was timely (I know, not up for any awards). "It's Complicated" had the most laugh out loud scenes in years. Streep and Baldwin were terrific. An oversight by the Academy not to nominate Baldwin as Best Supporting Actor. In 10 Best Picture nominees, they couldn't find room for "Star Trek?" I think it deserved one. Same for Emily Blunt in "Young Victoria." She certainly deserved a nomination; I thoroughly enjoyed that movie. Morgan Freeman was magnificent in "Invictus," the kind of performance that in another year would win easily. Didn't see the others.

Ultimately, in another decade, the film that will be most remembered (except for the groundbreaking special effects of "Avatar") is "Up in the Air." That's the best movie I saw this year.

1. I haven't really seen any of the nominated films
At least, not all the way through.

I need to go hunt me up a live online feed. Call me shallow. Call me anything you want but I love the Oscars, no matter how much they piss me off. :hi:

4. It was a great year for movies
haven't seen Hurt Locker yet but Crazy Heart was tremendous. Comedies are never recognized but The Hangover is worthy.

5. I was really wondering why Star Trek wasn't nominated.
It was a damn good reboot. Sure the die-hards can complain all they want but it was highly enjoyable.

8. Up!
I think that and Avatar will be the two remembered from this year, or at least still watched ten years from now.

My opinion of the best filmmaking--just pure camera work and dialogue and construction of a scene--was in the opening scene of Inglorious Basterds. The rest of the movie was interesting, but the story got weaker as it went along. That opening scene was amazing, though.
