30. OK. There are a lot of fries places, but my favorite in in Leideseplein.

It's got a yellow awning and is on a side street right off the main drag. I don't know why it was better than the other places we tried, but it just is. I also recommend the knoflook (garlic) sauce.

french fries came from Belgium, btw... and they eat them with mayo.

btw, if you're in the lowlands - Belgium has MUCH BETTER cuisine than The Netherlands.

if you take a train to Antwerp, the station there is one of those amazing victorian structures. it stops right beside the zoo - which has bonobos - and it's a short walk to Reuben's house and also Onze Lieve Vrau, a beautiful cathedral with Reubens' portraits inside.

behind the church, from the left side, if you're facing it, there's a nice little restaurant whose walls back up to the church. You should get some mussels with fritjes while there. very good.

also a good but affordable pralines maker (chocolates there, not the New Orleans stuff) is Leonidas. Godiva gets all the press here, but Neuhaus is just as good if not better. If you've never had pralines that have real cream in them... these don't keep so you just have to make yourself eat them... lol.

Belgium also has better beers. Kriek is cherry beer. You have to have some. it's a lambic. Duval and Trappist are worth trying... very dark. 100 different beers. I'm sort of a wimp sometimes so I like Vieux Temps. not a heavy beer at all.

Hellman's is a poor substitute. Miracle Whip cannot legally be called mayonnaise. I was impressed with the burger dude on Guy Fieri's show who did his own ketchup 'n mayo for his little place.
