6. Rolling Stones

Don't get me wrong - their earlier work in the 60s-70s was AMAZING. Then they starting putting out schlock sometime in the early 80s and haven't stopped since.

I would assume Led Zeppelin could have turned out like the Rolling Stones had Bonham not died. Although I love "In Through the Out Door" album it was the beginning of the end. The fact that they ceased as a band after Bonham died helped build the legend and kept their music relevant throughout the decades.

"Lebowski" seemed so forced and pretend. I know "Lebowski" is worshipped endlessly on this site, but it just didn't grab me. I gave it a second chance when my neighbors showed it as one of their summer movies in their backyard. Of about 30 people who went, only 4 were left at the end. We finally went there in September 2008 for 4 days after my sister raving about it. Yes, it was interesting and pretty and unusual, and I enjoyed it. But considering the time and distance and expense of getting there and staying there, I would say it really wasn't worth it when all those factors are considered. There was a LOT of driving, because the park is so big, it seems like we drove and drove and drove. Old Faithful was a major disappointment, it was much smaller and less impressive than I expected. Mammoth Hot Springs was boring. Roaring Mountain made no sound at all. I did enjoy seeing a lot of the brilliantly colored pools, being up close to the smaller geysers and the mud pots and all that. I did enjoy the lesser-known areas such as Black Sand Basin, the Sapphire Pool and other spots which were just as pretty and interesting but less crowded. I actually enjoyed Grand Teton National Park a bit more than Yellowstone, though we were there at the perfect time for the aspens turning color. I'm glad I went to Yellowstone once, but I feel no desire to go there again. I could go to Yosemite every year and never get tired of it.

Most of Yellowstone is wilderness, and that is where the beauty lies.

The news so wanted it to be another scenario like what happened in Southeast Asia after Xmas a few years back (took alot of folks by suprise) but instead they just gave us Al Capone's Vault type letdown. I still can't believe the News (and for that matter myself) devoted hours that afternoon hoping to have a Tsunami break and all they got was some decent surf waves. I still recall CNN calling some guy walking on the beach an "idiot" - thing is, it was CNN and all the other Cable news outlets that ended up being an idiot.

An earthquake in Chile back in 1960 DID trigger a massive tsunami (35 foot wave) that leveled downtown Hilo and killed 61 people. It would have been more had the technology not existed yet for a warning system.

An earthquake in Alaska in 1946 killed 170 Hawaiians.

There were others too, including one in 1975.

It's not an exact science predicting a tsunami. After what happened in Indonesia, it is worth the hype. Yes, the media is annoying, but had 1946 or 1960 happened all over again, who would be saying that now? Do we fault the media for overhyping Katrina? Nope - because Katrina earned it and then some.

But I expect as much from east coasters who know nothing about earthquakes or tsunamis and have never experienced either.

What I have read and heard leads me to believe that she was primarily interested in promoting her monastic order, not actual charity. The bulk of the money she raised was not for charity but for the R.C. Church itself. The Vatican frequently used her as the public face of Catholicism to promote its political agenda. For example she went to Ireland in the 1990s to campaign against a law that would allow divorce for people who were subject to domestic violence.

She also was a great believer in the redemptive power of suffering. Here hostel was called the Home for the Dying, not the Hospital for the Seriously Ill. This is more than semantics. It was NOT a medical facility and made very limited if any attempt at actual treatment for illness. Bojaxhiu personally found religious affirmation in watching people suffer and minimally caring for them, an attitude that can only be described as sadistic.

Like every other public figure, everything we know about her is from media reports. As is often the case, most if not all of what we know about her is wrong. Nevertheless, actual information is available and it paints a far less flattering picture than the gushing media has.

1. Disneyland isn't made up to be equal with all things worth visiting in California, or even the LA area. It's just Disneyland. Disney World, on the other hand, has been pimped out by tourism folks as the main reason for visiting Florida, which is just an insult to this incredible state of mine. There are so many other places in Florida that are just as worth visiting as Disney World, if not moreso. Pristine beaches, the just amazingly beautiful natural springs, the Everglades, St. Augustine, the Ocala National Forest, the Keys--these are all places that deserve just as much attention from people visiting Florida as Disney World.

2. Disneyland was built in a contained space in an already developed area. The impact to urban sprawl was minimal, since sprawl was already there. The effect Disney World had on Central Florida was much different. Orlando was a sleepy smaller city surrounded by pristine woodlands, lakes and wilderness. Along came Disney World and that all got ripped apart--not necessarily by the park itself, but by the thousands of hotels and restaraunts and tshirt shops that got built immediately surrounding the park to accommodate all the tourists.

3. As far as I know, Disney didn't subvert the normal building and development codes when building Disneyland. On the other hand, Disney stealthly started to buy up land in Central Florida at a cheap price without announcing their plans, then turned around and solicited from the Florida legislature special exemptions for normal building and development codes that everyone else had to follow.

That entire ecosystem alone is one of the most fragile and beautiful in the world, and the geological wonders are just a bonus. There is SO MUCH MORE to it than one geyser. The pools, the mudpots, the terraces... makes me wish I was a geologist at times.

One of the most sublime moments in my life was in May 1999, when I stood in view of the 'Grand Canyon' of the Yellowstone, watching the lower falls, as snow fell and bison foraged only 20 feet away. It was a primal, breathtaking scene.

72. As with most places, the timing of your visit greatly affects your experience

Almost any place in the world is better when it's uncrowded. Long lines and excessive noise (from people, radios and cars) can ruin any place. Seasons and the vagaries of weather also factor in. A lot of the sublime experiences like the one you described have the element of being in the right place at the right time.

















I'm glad I went there once, though honestly I don't feel any desire to go there again, but maybe 20 years from now I will want to revisit. Since I live in San Diego, it was a long way to go, and it was worth it once, but to go there again doesn't seem worth it to me. I can drive to Yosemite in 8 hours and to me that seems to be a much bigger payoff vs. the time, effort and expense involved. But Yellowstone is certainly a unique place in the world and I'm very glad it is preserved.

NEVER in the summer. WAY too crowded, as you say. I think it's an easy flight to Billings from LAX - usually through SLC. My parents used to live in Cody, only 50 miles from Yellowstone. So after staying at their place for a few days, hitting the road to Yellowstone was easy. Plus, they knew lots of great backroads around the south fork of the Shoshone River, and there are some incredible vistas unknown to mainstream tourists.

Been there 4 times, and see something different each time. The most surreal was 9/11. I was actually there that day (my Dad's 60th birthday, so the trip was pre-planned for months). Couldn't have been clearer or more tranquil, and so far removed from the tragedy enveloping the news.

Yellowstone is among my favorite places on earth. I can see thinking that Old Faithful is overrated, I suppose, but as you say there's so much more. And while it's super crowded in the summer months, it's still possible to find quiet, isolated, beautiful places. I've been there on July 4th weekend, and the main features were packed, sure, but even we were able to find a number of great features and places that were nearly or completely devoid of people. Of course, it's even better when it isn't packed. I wish I still lived close enough to visit regularly.

Revolutionary and unprecedented camera angles, cinematography, the narrative, etc. In other words, it wasn't so much the story (the vaunted 'Rosebud' aspect aside) as the technical aspect. It influenced a massive amount of movies in its wake, even unto this day. Sometimes I catch glimpses of Kane in ALL kinds of movies, and I bet 50% of the time, the director doesn't even realize he stole a concept from that film, but rather, from another imitator.

One thing that was shocking about it in its time that is lost today was the balls of taking on the Hearst family. It has faded from national memory, but Welles really took a big chance, risking his financial anc creative livelihood. These days, very few people take risks creatively in the film business. For that alone, Kane deserves its accolades.

is to listen to the commentary by Roger Ebert while watching. It's like attending a film seminar. His commentary for Casablanca is awesome, too. But all the others yes. Sandra Bullock seems like a very nice and compassionate person but, considering the number of movies I've seen her in, I've never really rated her highly as an actress

I've seen HDTV....it's the exact same thing I can see on regular TV, except the resolution is better. Big whoop....not worth spending the extra $1000, at least not right now.

What really burns me are supposed "sports fans" who turn in their season tickets because they just bought an HDTV and they think the experience is just as good as being there in person. Trust me, it's not. Having the chance to be at the stadium if something historic happens during the game as opposed to watching it on TV, albiet one with better resolution? That's the most idiotic thing I've ever heard.

As for Goodfellas? Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad movie in and of itself. And yes, it is based on a true story and we know in real life mobsters are just plain scum, and there's little if anything romantic about the lifestyle. But if I'm watching a movie, I want to at least have something to like or identify with the characters. There was no real sympathetic characters in Goodfellas whatsoever, not even Henry Hill or his wife. I'm sorry, give me a Tony Soprano or a Michael Corleone over a Henry Hill any day. I like a bit of moral ambiguity in my mobster stories.
