I was eating some Irish Soda Bread this morning and broke my tooth.

I thought the crown had fallen off but no, the tooth broke just above the gum line. It will have to come out. Next week. I told my dentist to find an oral surgeon who uses nitrous because I don't want to know what's happening. My dentist won't pull it because there isn't enough tooth left to get hold of and "it has a big bulbous root."

but blissfully unaware. I don't want to be knocked out due to transporation issues. I want nitrous, novacaine, and my mp3 player. I don't want the dentist giving me a play by play. Maybe getting knocked out wouldn't be such a bad idea -- but getting to and from would be very difficult. We have piss-poor public trans around here.

You want to find a dentist that does general sedation for people with high dental fear.

You are awake and aware the whole time with nitrous. And I actually found it more stressful. I didn't like it at all.

13. I've had a lot of work done under nitrous

and did okay. The novacaine will dope it up so it won't hurt and the nitrous makes me goofy enough to get through it. I'd rather spare myself the general if I can -- I have very bad luck with general. I just want it to be over -- I can't get in until next Friday.

9. I broke a molar once right up the middle and to the root

My dentist thought I had an infection and sent me home with an antibiotic even though I told him I was pretty sure it was broken. A week later I went back and he realized he'd made a mistake. He apologized profusely and said that dentist school has lesson number 1 which says 'listen to what the patient tells you first'.

I have had a molar pulled with Novocain only. The doc explained everything and he said that if the top of the tooth pulled off that they had a nifty little tool to drill down into the root and pull it out. Not to worry, the best thing to do is stay cool so that your blood pressure stays under control.

What I do in these situations, I put it out of my mind until the day comes to do the procedure. Stress is not good. And be sure to follow all post op directions to heal as quickly as possible. Peace and best wishes.
