PC nonsense has got to stop...
Edited on Thu Mar-25-04 12:09 AM by rumguy

As a Dylan fan this just pisses me off!!!

"Education and social work are the fields in which the language police are busiest. My favourite example is from a new college textbook on human development that includes this statement: 'As a folksinger once sang, how many roads must an individual walk down before you can call them an adult.' This gruesome effort is some educator's attempt at a gender-neutral makeover to the classic folksong Blowin' in the Wind. In the original, it goes, 'How many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man?'"

1. Gruesome indeed. That's beyond parody.
I'd love to see what this same soulless hack would do to "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands"...

2. I agree, it's ridiculous
Non-specific genderspeak is usually a stylistic nightmare. No one talks like that, much less a poet.

4. I dunno. It was a nice movement while it lasted.
I like the trend of feminists using "she" as a "gender neutral" pronoun, the way "he" is often used; the effect stimulates debate.

5. I don't mind that at all...
It's just when you mangle poetry, that's when it's gone to far...

3. "A folksinger"???
Don't change a poet's words.

6. But it does offer some intriguing possibilities for satire!
How, for example, would this person have altered Prince's "Sexy M.F?"

"You libidinously desirable copulator of female parents."
